Alright...I was just thinking...if you could get any car that's reasonably attainable (McClaren F1s don't count) for your average person (doesn't matter what country.), what would it be?
Currently, I think my favorite car is the 2002 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R...simply because it's what I want my car to look like in the end...it's the goal, I guess. I think it's beautiful...a close second would be a 1969-1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1, because I've always drooled over it, and its simply a badazz car.

Well, posting pix is difficult since all I have is my little PDA at the moment, but one of the reasons I decided to go to business school is so I might be able to afford an Aston Martin V-8 Vantage in the near future. $120K, so can't afford that doing a civil service job here in Hawaii.

Allow me...not bad. I saw tons of Aston Martins when I was in the UK. No Vantages though. :hihi:

I'm still in love with Ferrari's, even if I could make a faster and more reliable car for 1/4 the price.
Eventually, I'll just get an F360 Modena, but for now, it's Miata power!!

for some comfortable cruising, i'd really like to get an older black Jaguar XJ12.

So big...curvy... and somehow menacing... with 12 cylinders... :geekdance:
But for fun, a miata with a V8.

I've driven the F360 Modena . . . they handle like crap. It feels very heavy and the worst handling you want to experience in a racecar, this car did. It goes from understeer to immediate oversteer. I'm sure the racecar in the picture handles much better. The very few things I liked about the car was it's styling, the perfect computer controlled downshifts and the electronic clutch . . . I was impressed. The upshifts could be done faster manually I think.
I hate to burst your bubble Cory, but in this case I think you're buying the name.

Sorry Cory, I wanted to warn you before you go out buy one right away.
Rich? Far from it. Currently collecting UEI. Being at the track does have it's advantages though (the first gen Viper sucks as well). You how the old saying goes: "How do you end up with a million dollars in racing? . . . start with 5".
The Elise is a very good plateform for performance. Even in stock form it's impressive (except for lack of power). I can't imagine what the Exige will do! You know an older car that was impressive was the NSX when it first came out. The suspension was a little soft, but it was balanced very well. Nothing a coilover kit couldn't fix. I always wanted to test drive a Diablo. It's probably too bulky for any kind of road racing performance. Did you ever see the engine? Looks like they got it out of a semi-truck or some power boat. It looks like it took up half the car! I wouldn't want that thing behind me in a frontend collision . . . better be really anchored down.

Actually, Tom, I think Cory was talking about just owning a Modena makes you seem rich....but yeah. :hihi:
Lamborghinis scare me now after seeing that rollover...the probable cause was because of a recall that wasn't done on it, by Lamborghini. Pretty scary stuff.

Ahhh, I get it now. I thought it was because of all the fancy cars I've gotten the privilage to "test to the limit". Good thing my crashing days were over. I can't stand the thought of crashing someone's car like that.

Haha yeh what mike said!
but yeh, it must be so nice to have a racing school where you can drive so many cool cars. then you can really see what the hype is, and what is really good. diablo isn't my cup of tea, tho i did love the countach 500lps or whatever it was called... till i heard the reviews of non-working ac, hot as heck, noisy, unparkable, etc... maybe the new ferraris are better?
as for power, i thought the elise had really good amounts of power! but then again, i have two miatas.. ;)

Sorry Cory if I came off too strong. Been a little edgy lately, but no excuse. The 348 actually had stiffer suspension than the Modena. Maybe too many folks complained about the ride quality. Just to say I have a Ferrari is something (especially the Japanese, wow) . . . want to let us know how that feels Dirt Racer? (about owning a Ferrari that is. *gotta be specific*)

I had a friend with a 348 challenge car, ohlins suspension, some really big and light rims, and just minor mods. It was faster then my DSM by a lot! Maybe if anything, go that route. Too bad his car got totalled from being towed by a guy who went too fast down the grapevine and launched his car off the freeway.. haha
Holy crap, really? Uhh, what's DSM? Sorry.

Diamond Star Motors, I had a 92 Mitsu Eclipse GSX. I HATE Mitsubishi!!!!! POS cars.. :D
That goes for Plymouth/Dodge, and Eagle, the 3 manufacturers that made the Eclipse/Laser/Talon. Had two out of the three... :snipersmilie:
Oh, is that a tuner car company that specializes in Mitsu's?
ArchangelX
08-24-2006, 06:01 PM
Diamond-Star Motors (commonly abbreviated to DSM) was an automobile manufacturing joint venture between the Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC). The name came from the parent companies' logos: three diamonds (Mitsubishi) and a pentastar (Chrysler). Three of the vehicles produced by Diamond-Star Motors, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser, are also generally referred to as DSMs.
:gapteeth:
Okay, now I understand.
I was looking at buying a Mitsu motor (brand new race spec) from Japan. It is a 4G6 for our formula cars. The valve cover says AMG, just like with Mercedes. Anyone heard of that? Got pictures and will post later, but I'm not on my computer right now.

Ahh, Mirage motors I think. Race built to withstand long WOT throttle applications! 4G61 is probably the engine code. Was it a 1.5l?
They do make damn good motors.. its just that everything around it falls apart.

Hmmm... what would I realistically drive... Hmmmm... lemme look in my sig... Yep!! That's it! I've wanted a "new" Impala SS since they came out in 1994... and once they switched to analog guages and a floor shifter in '96, that was the one I wanted. The car is totally capable of being the ultimate all around car. Realistic interior room for 5... leather seating to boot. Enough trunk space to carry all their golf clubs and then some. Stock they got upwards of 22 mpg on average... and with the aftermarket, they can handle, brake, and accelerate with todays Corvettes... for alot less money as well. It's everything I want in one car, and then some.
Since my first racing love is drag racing... well, that's what my '66 Impala SS is for. 600+ horse 408 (pushing 800 on juice), stout TH400 and a built 12 bolt out back. Raw, unadulterated American muscle. Should be able to trip the clocks (if we ever get some) in the low 10 or high 9 second range and scare small children on weekend cruises... This thing will be wicked once she's done.

They're 2.0l's @ 170ps. It's a good thing that most of the factory parts are removed for the Formula Mirages if that's the case. These motors do buzz in almost stock form. I think mainly do to having harmonic counter balance shafts.

Wow, its a normal 4G63 2.0L found in the Eclipses, except its the NA version I believe, "Tuned by AMG" with higher compression, piston oil squirters, and a more aggressive cam profile. 170hp seems correct!
I always took out the balance shafts, robs alot of power!

You're kidding! Wow, when a rock or something gets in the belt and breaks it, the engine vibrates so bad you can barely see! Maybe because the other balance shaft is still spinning.

Nope, the balance shaft belt is on its own little belt behind the timing belt.
That's one reason I use to take them off, if that belt broke, then the timing belt would get shredded!

Well, there are 2 counter balance shafts, right? One has it's own belt, but the other is driven off the cam timing belt. How do you eliminate that?

I can deal with door dings and high mileage when it comes to an NSX. Probably going to overhaul the thing anyway if I pursue it. Latka steered my interest in a direction new to me . . . the Hakosuka. I have dreams of this car now. It won't look as modern as that '90 NSX, but it's the nostalgic thing that got me to take interest I guess. Is this a sign of old age or something?

That's the way to go or put everything on a credit card, but make sure you pay the balance off every month. This way you can keep a record of your spending without having to hold on to all your receipts. I tell you what, when you spend cash it really hurts.
I fell into the credit card debt hole before too ($20,000). But, when I (actually we) finally paid it off, it was like a big weight was lifted off my shoulders. Never done it since. I thought it was normal to have a credit card debt of $15~$20k. It's not like I couldn't keep up with the payments or anything. Actually I wasn't even paying interest or fees. I would get the "0% interest for 6 months" deal everytime a new credit card application came in and transfer funds. At one time I had 3 different cards with the same company! I thought I was really smart doing this . . . wrong! My wife couldn't believe she married into debt like that. So, a year and a half later it was cleaned up. It was really hard times, but well worth it.

I remember in undergrad when they started "giving" credit cards to students. They'd give you a few gas cards, a Visa with like $500 limit, a MC with like $500 limit, a Nordstrom card, and a few others. I was shocked seeing how fast I reached the limit back then.....it was a great learning experience.

Haha so true... I was in over $30k while in school!! Now I use a airline mileage card, but make sure the balance is paid in full each month. After taking a few accounting classes and learning how to make an ammortization chart, seeing how much money I'm wasting on interest was nuts. I use to do the same thing as you, get new credit cards and transfer it for 6 months, then get a new one. But I found that getting new cards messes up your credit report because each time they do a credit check on you, it will bring your score down sometimes. Too many new ones will keep lowering your score.

I didn't know that . . . interesting.

Hey...those are cool! Did Ishikawa or Yoshita bring those? :D
I wonder why? Maybe it's to get students started with good credit history or something? Or, maybe to spend more money at the school. Or even to teach responsible money management.
Hey...those are cool! Did Ishikawa or Yoshita bring those? :D
Actually, they came with the hakosuka books and video. Okuyama gave them to his friend that was visiting Hawaii recently and I picked them up from him. You want one to play with?
If no one knows who we're talking about, let me introduce them. Yoshida-san was my race sponsor, hence the Silverado I'm driving. Ishikawa-san is a former Japanese F3000 (Formula Nippon) driver and GT300 driver. He drove Omoto's C-West FD (RX-7) for a number of years. Drove F3 for a number of years as well. Oh, I almost forgot, Ishikawa did 1 race in the U.S.; Indy Lights at the Long Beach Grand Prix (placed tenth in a beater rental). I was going to hook him up with Eric Bachelart's team (I think they won the championship that year), but he made the mistake of hiring a Japanese manager that chose a much lesser team. Okuyama-san works for San A Shobo which is the company that owns most of the popular Japanese car magazines such as Option and Best Car. He is one of the editors of Best Car magazine (Japan's most selling car magazine). Okay, now everybody knows. *thinking he posted this somewhere before*
Wow some peoples idea of attainable is much higher than mine Im realizing! lol
Oh and noob, with the Pantera. Man a few months ago while still living in Vegas, I headed to the Orleans one Friday night as was the norm and litterally half a floor was nothing but Panteras. I was like, wholly crap. Guess it was the national convention. I had seen like 5 in my whole life and there must of been 100 if not more there. Some awesome track ready ones too. Good stuff.
If that was in May, that's the POCA annual summer run to Vegas. My bro was going to do it and drive from SFO, but I declined. SFO to Monterey is okay, but you have to be a masochist to drive to Vegas.

Getting back to the subject . . . I have 3 hakosuka's! Anybody want one?
If no takers and still available, I'll take one. Are they Choro-Q? Looks like it.

I have to go sneak one away from Marissa. I wonder if she remembers how many there are?

If not, then a BMW M5; and hell, I'd even take an old one.

Yeah... I'd sell my house and live in a Supra if I had to. But you can only find 2 types of supras... ones that have been screwed around with and they want a million dollars for, or ones that haven't been touched and they want a million dollars and your first born child for.
I have come to the harsh conclusion that the only supra I'll own is my XMOD.

For me it would be a Mercedes E55 AMG. I think that is the ultimate all purpose car. I would leave it bone stock, it would be comfy, looks good, no need recon, and runs 12's.
Unfortunately for me, if I actually had enough money to buy a E55 AMG I would probably buy 16 third gen Camaros instead. :belokan:

Being that I Auto-x, this is the car that would take me to the next level. I have always said the MRS tuned with a capable driver would be one of the few to beat Curtis and his Z.

Something to negotiate Molokai back roads, or Oahu's potholes.
Something I've always wanted since highschool, though is a '69 Camaro. Refer to Lois' signature if anyone doesn't know what they look like. Or this one :)

I balked on three opportunities to pick one up, all of them sold by the time I scraped up enough cash to buy them. Granted, that was 25 years ago. One lady in my parent's neighborhood still has a plain white '69 that she still drives. Hmm.
The blue and white one that I heard was in Ron's Performance is really nice, but I didn't hit the lottery yet.
