View Full Version : Bose 901's
We've had these Bose 901 speakers for over 4 years now. They were hooked up to a cheap amp and even though we thought they sounded great. After buying "Maniac's R1" (HT user name) Kenwood receiver for $40 these speakers now rock! I was thinking we needed a sub-woofer, but not anymore.

Yeah...they sounded great...they really came alive. They're to the point now, where they're actually capable of being TOO loud. Play some "Toto" on them. Hahah. :ghostrider_h4h:

Haha, you heard Toto in the background didn't you. That's Miki reminiscing old times. She digs 80's music. The newer music has more bass which vibrates your chest. These speakers are direct reflecting. Each speaker has 8 very small speakers that point away from each other at about a 140 degrees. The sound bounces off the walls and then comes together to make the sound stronger. You could actually put your head right next to one of the speakers and it wouldn't be that loud, but when you back up the sound is powerful. Wierd how it works.

That technology is over 25 years old. My father had a set of the "original" 901s when we moved here to Hawaii back in '83. In fact, I think he still has them! LOL They rocked way back then, when like Tom said, the music wasn't even made to sound as powerful.
I have a set of 4001s as my L/R channel speakers at home, and they flat out pound in regular 2-channel stereo mode. They use some of the 901 direct reflecting technology, but look alot more like traditional speakers, and they are about half the size. I love 'em!

Yeah, the original 901's are better quality I think. The one's we have, have cheap pastic speaker covers and are made out of press board. The sound is the same though.

I think they are on Series 6 now! I also had some in 1980~1981 (around then) but I remember one of the key things to getting the most out of the 901s was speaker placement (so many inches from the rear wall, so many inches from the side wall, and at least so many inches between the left/right). REH, right now your speakers are not placed correctly - if you still have the directions for the speakers, you should try it (you'll be amazed).
I remember the Bose rep use to play Boston through the 901s and it was amazing to see how much air blew out the rears (your hand would get pushed back!).
Yeah, I know about the placements of the speakers, thanks DK. I really want to hang them from the ceiling, but Miki is totally against it. They sell the pedestles for them, but my house is so damn small, there's no room. That's why I have them on top of the entertainment center. When we were at the Kapolei NB meeting the other day, I noticed 901's hanging from the ceiling, hehe. Am I being fanatical about these speakers or what? I think they're the best speakers you can buy for the money.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about how we hung them from the ceiling. Hahaha. It was base housing so I guess we didn't care.
I just read that the first 901s were made in 1968! :hypo: The current gen of 901 has over 350 enhancements over that original 901.

Holy cow... I knew they were around in the late 70s (when my father picked his up), but didn't know they came out in '68!! Dayum!!
The speakers are fairly small, but size is deceiving. Here's some pics of them.

I'm really not supposed to have them on top of something because of the direct reflectingness. You're supposed to have them suspended either by placing them on pedestles or hanging them from the ceiling.

At least the rear is free (and not in a cabinet). The key is the reflecting sound - front is not the key in these babies. I think the lefts are good (as can be) but the rights miss out on the side-wall bounce; nevertheless, crank-up the Boston (preferably on vinyl so you can hear all the crackling sound too! )!

Someone needs to dust their air vents. :hihi:
Miki kept all her vinyl and the turn table, so we could actually play her old albums. It's funny . . . when I was younger I was really into home stereos. I had a Pioneer integrated amp (60 watts per channel), Pioneer 16 band per channel equalizer, 2 turn tables (both being Techniques) with mixer, JVC tape deck (with feather touch buttons and LED equalizer meters) 2 Pioneer 250 watt speakers that had 1 woofer, 2 mid ranges, 2 tweeters and a horn style super tweeter. The 60 watts per channel amp wasn't much but the quality! The system rocked and I could make my own mixed tapes with songs that faded into each other. Made all the songs the same quality sound with the equalizer. Played the mixed tapes in my car stereo. Is it just me or do they not make quality stereos anymore? That's just me . . . my good friend was into stereos too. He had the whole dbx system with Nakamichi Dragon tape deck and Pioneer HPM 1100 speakers to name a few. Yamaha pre and main amps as well.
Anyhow, Mike very observant with the dust. I saw that after I posted. Now I'm going to have to clean them before Miki gets on my case. Thank allot, hehe.
