Honolulu police arrested the vice speaker of the state House early on Tuesday morning after he tested more than double the legal limit for driving under the influence, authorities said.
Rep. Jon Karamatsu, 32, crashed his car into the center median on the westbound side of Moanalua Freeway near the Ahua Street overpass, police said.
It happened at about 1:10 a.m.
...
He failed a field sobriety test, officers said.
They took him into custody and gave him a breathalyzer test at the station. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.171, police said. That is more than double the legal limit of 0.08.
What did the media leave out...
Rep. Jon Karamatsu (D)

He is a an attorney who graduated from Gonzaga University law school, the University of Hawaii and Pearl City High School.
They may have left out the (D) but they put in an extra 'a' at the end. Seriously don't people proof read the stories before they're published? Extremely unprofessional IMO to have obvious grammar or spelling mistakes in a published article.

Actually the whole article is horribly written. It sounds like the person writing it was drunk...they need a breathalyser test to see if they're above the legal limit for writing under the influence.

I didn't know there was a limit for driving under the influence. I thought u either are DUI or not...

The law for over 21 is that the legal limit is 0.08 % BAC. But in that case of an accident where there is damage to property or an injury, the legal limit drops down to 0.05% BAC...
If your under 21, you fall into the "zero-tolerance" law which means any measurable amount.
Either way... he was waaayyy over... I have seen worse... Borderline Alcohol posioning...

I have no sympathy for people (Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or Emo...) who get pulled over with a BAC above the leagal limit...
WTF is so hard about calling a cab or a ride from a friend/family????
They're scat munching pukes of the earth that deserve the maximum penalty, but rarley get it...

I remember reading something about how if you're under 21 you can consume alcohol under parental supervision or w/e. Maybe it was just a proposed bill or something.
Do officers need reasonable suspicion to do a field sobriety test/ breathalyser test or can they just do it whenever they feel like it?

Somewhat... the PC is any violation that allows them to perform a traffic stop (so a chain hanging from the rear view mirror or a sticker on the glass larger than 7 square inches is enough to issue a traffic violation... ANY citable offense)... Once the stop is made the RS for the SFST (Standardized Field Sobriety Test) is based upon the officers observations (prior observed driving infraction(s)=weaving-near misses-running lights or signs- etc..., red glassy eyes, smell of an alcoholic beverage, fumbling for paperwork/dexterity or slurring of their speech...)

Probably gonna be swept under the rug, in short order.
And even if it isn't, it'll be forgotten, in short order.

There is a girl back home in Omaha who has been caught DUI 6 times since August. One of those times she rolled her carr down a median, and another she was caught doing 94 in a 55.

Karamatsu said he will fight the charge of excessive drunken driving.

Minutes from the Waipahu Board meeting...highlighting increase in DUI problems...Karamatsu not present :D
He sends a representative who sends his regrets for not attending...how thoughtful.
