Subject: RE: In support of the Super Ferry! Please take swift action!

ALOHA!

Thank you for your e-mail voicing your concern over the recent controversy regarding the SuperFerry.

As it is well documented, I have always been a strong supporter of responsible businesses that support our community's desire to have a stable economy and which offer well paid secure jobs on our islands.

In this case, however, I have serious concerns about the process utilized by the Lingle Administration in exempting the SuperFerry from an environmental review. Furthermore it is clear that the Administration ignored the Counties' request for the Environmental Impact Statement when authorizing the SuperFerry to sail to Maui and Kauai.

More than two years ago the Neighbor Island County Council's asked the Governor to conduct an Environmental Review on the SuperFerry. I was on the Council at the time and supported this request. If that had happened, I don't believe we would be in the predicament we are in today. Along with the environmental issue, there are valid concerns about traffic, invasive species and the ability of our infrastructure to support this new source of visitors. These concerns must be addressed, and it is my intention to share each of these concerns with my colleagues IF a special session is convened.

As you are well aware, this has become a highly controversial issue, with both sides citing valid and bona fide concerns. Unfortunately, a few individuals have chosen to voice their dissent through acts of verbal intimidation and criminal property damage. This cannot be condoned for many reasons, but especially because it sends a negative message about Kauai's residents throughout our State that is not indicative of who we are as Kauaians.

As a State lawmaker, I have always encouraged everyone to become involved the decision making process. Over the past four days I have received 5,600 e-mails about the SuperFerry in which I am grateful that constituents would take the time to share their opinions with me. After reviewing each e-mail I'd like to ask if you could please let me know what island or district you reside in. As you can imagine, many e-mails don't have a name, many e-mails have only a first name attached. Every e-mail matters to me but if I should see you on Kauai, I'd like to personally thank you for your in-put.

Again, thank you for voicing your concern as we seek ways to resolve this diverse issue legally and responsibly. MAHALO, Jimmy

Representative James Kunane Tokioka

Asst. Majority Floor Leader and Vice Chair, Legislative Management (LMG) and International Affairs (INT)

District 15: Wailua Homesteads, Hanamaulu, Lihue, Puhi, portion of Old Koloa Town

State Capitol, Room 322 – Honolulu, Hawaii 96813 -- Phone: 586-6270 – Fax: 586-6271

E-Mail: reptokioka@capitol.hawaii

And my response:

Thanks for the email Rep. Tokioka,

Just out of curiosity, when the administration made that decision, did the legislature have a chance to vote and discuss it? If they did, then the discussion of how the SF came to be is completely mute. We are at a point, I believe and many others do as well, in which it is too late to solve the mistakes of the past, but we are able to save our current predicament. The special session will decide whether the SF sinks or floats, and if it sinks, the the state taxpayers will be left with the bill. For myself and many of my friends and neighbors, that is simply unacceptable espescially after the long length of time that this project has been in the works. If you must do an EIS, then I believe you must at the very least, allow the SF to operate. Regardless of who made the decisions, we view the entire legislature and administration responsible for the actions of today. Thanks again for the hard work, and we trust that you will all do your jobs to the best of your abilities.

Mahalo!

this is another whining Democrat response...they immediately blame the GOP for everything. I swear Democrats love to do this...everything is GOP fault, Democrats are so stupid they just sit on their fat asses and wait for someone else to take action. Then they blame them if it goes wrong or take all the credit if it goes right.

HELLO YOU DUMB FUKKING MUTHAF#$%#R THE DEMOCRATS HAVE THE MAJORITY SO ALL LAWS CAN ONLY PASS IF THEY AGREE....HOW CAN THE GOP SOMEHOW HAVE THIS "IMAGINARY" MAJORITY POWER TO PASS EVERYTHING? YOU ARE THE FUKKING RETARDS WHO HAVE THE MAJORITY FOR HOW MANY DECADES? EVERY LAW ONLY PASSES BECAUSE YOU FUKKING DEMOCRATS PASS THEM....AND CANT READ SHIT FOR BRAINS. YET YOU GO AND DRIVE DRUNK AS FUK AND CRASH RISKING INNOCENT PEOPLE...:yeah:

If he had voted in favor of an EIS why did it take him 2 years to get one done? Why did he shut his mouth and let it go ignored if he felt it was so important to begin with?

What a liar...replace him with a Republican already damn it. I cant stand these Democrats whining and trying to say they did nothing wrong....the asshole even stated he supported an EIS and knew its importance years ago...yet DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR YEARS ABOUT IT...meaning implicitly he doesnt give a fuk and probably didnt know wtf an EIS was until all the protestors gave a stink in 2007.

If these lawmakers understood the importance of the EIS and NOT to bypass in 2005...then wth were they doing for 2 years? That's right they pass the gas cap law, refused to pay to fix the roads, cut education funding, ignored the harbors that are falling apart, but of course...they gave themselves a raise...:D

i would agree that your response was both valid and professional. i think he has received much more irate, unprofessional, discourteous, and downright rude regarding this issue than you think, so he was probably pleased to get your response, whether or not he agreed with it.

a professional, courteous response is much more likely to make an impact on a person's thinking and actions. sure, you can always use brute force or yelling to make your point, but that only works so many times before people tune you out or turn on you.

i would hope that it makes enough of an impact on him that he actually considers it and thinks about in light of your concerns, rather than any political stance.

hey, nothing wrong with sending an e-mail like that every now and then... i figure sometimes you just gotta blow off some steam or amuse yourself, because nothing you can say or do is going to make any difference in the least.

my co-worker has stopped me in the past from sending some rather sarcastic/interesting e-mails to one of our vendors that continually screws up orders and processing.

my supervisors get bcc'd my correspondence with this vendor to establish a paper trail (sort of a cya on my part). i warned the big boss the more aggravated i get with the vendor, the funnier my e-mails will be. i think he looks forward to reading some of them... stuff that he can't say b/c he's the big boss...

i would say that's about right around 50% of the time. i know some politicos that were pretty cool in their younger days, and idealistic. they got into politics because they wanted to do some good, make some changes in the system, represent the people, etc... and then ended up turning power hungry and moving up the food chain.

other people got into politics because they were already power hungry, and representing their constitutents, doing what's right, etc... was never in their mind. the perks and side benefits are considerable, once you get high up enough in the ranks.

the down side is that you are always in the public eye, under public scrutiny, etc... every decision you make, whether for you or for your constituents, lobbyists, etc... will be held up with a magnifying glass and unflattering spin by your opponents.

heh... "I'm batman, the consigliere..."

but seriously, though... everyone in any kind of power position has/should have a variety of consigliere - there are those who are personal advisors/confidants, image/spin doctors, and then there are those who specialize in warfare (political, business, or other).

there's a time to play ball, and there's a time to play hardball. the trick is having an advisor that is honest enough to tell you when it's time to play which.

Udrivecrap
10-17-2007, 11:23 PM
you really have to be on top of things to know what to play and when...

i'm wondering if at some point the politicians just wait around for someone to tell them what to do... that's prolly why they golf alot.

I could not agree more. Hawaii really does need to change its name, by adding a (R) in front of it.

Tomorrow I'm Making a GOP smiley... Our (D) old birds have been sitting in their nests doing jack shit for too long already. It's just too bad that our elected officials will add anything in front of their names just to get elected, like fasi..... Is he a (R) or a (D)?
