I played The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, and it was fantastic although, also, a little stale when it came to the characters that populated the world. They were rather lifeless and it dulled the game quite a bit. But the freedom of interactivity...the huge, epic scale of it all...the amount of things you could do...the fact that you could pick up anything in the gameworld (reminded me of Ultima), all of that came together to really create an incredible RPG experience. The graphics themselves were incredible at the time...and the huge mushroom fields and mountains still look great.
But The Elder Scrolls:Oblivion is coming out in just 4 days...and I think my life is going to go on standby. This game is absolutely incredible...just the graphics alone are enough to make my mouth drop. But the real meat of the game is the Radiant AI scripting...it sounds incredibly fun!
Radiant AI is a system that gives our NPCs a certain level of autonomy, and any level of autonomy is potentially dangerous. As I'm fond of pointing out, I can't seem to maintain a two-person household in the Sims without someone eventually setting themselves on fire. So overall we tend to play our cards somewhat conservatively in this area, to avoid the NPCs going wacky and slaughtering whole villages or anything. Yet they still manage to surprise us every once in a while. Just the other day I was fighting the "boss" of a particular dungeon -- a nasty orc warrior in heavy armor. As he was tearing me to pieces, he shouted degrading epithets at me. "I'll pick my teeth with your spine, puny elf!" He proved the victor, and in the moments before the load menu came up, he knelt to loot my corpse while muttering with disdain, "Annoying creature." I love it when small random events like that add up into something that fits the character so perfectly.
It's going to be impressive, to say the least...I have played a really good game in a while because I've been busy, but I'm going to enjoy this one, methinks. I might have to buy a new video card though.
