today was the last day of operations for waialae bowl.
sad to see that house bit the dust. not my favorite house but it was tough and thats what the sport is about. Pali lanes is set to close at the end of this year. Kam bowl closed last year. 2009 will be left with 2 public bowling alleys leeward bowl and Aiea bowl.
i have the same perspective on this topic as well as a racetrack. State and the city and county can have so many golf courses but they cant use close one of those and make a bowling alley or track?
sucks because i grew up bowling too. hawaii has a great youth bowling community. feel bad for the younger kids that wont be able to bowl as much now due to cost and places to bowl. also the older folks who bowl who do it to just keep active. lots of old folks bowl still and its makes them happy.

I heard about this, and was surprised as well. I wondered what brought about the closing down of operations? I heard that the owner was retiring; and I was like ? That's nice that he's retiring but the place still could be left open...
*sigh* Another one bites the dust. (I hear that song going on in my brain.)
Where is Pali lanes? sorry. they don't let me out of my cage too often. :gapteeth:

Heard about it last year. Only a few more left...Leeward, Aiea, Kailua(?), and the ones on base.

pali is closing down in dec 08
all the bowling alleys here (public) face the same problem.. RENT and Electric bill!! and its expensive!! they barely make profit or sometimes not even profit thats why its hard to stay in business here in hawaii. RENT keeps going up electricity going up..but trying to keep prices down for the customer? sooner or later they just be losing money. the owner of Aiea bowl retired and passed it own to 2 new owners who have been doing Really great in turning around the place. Leeward bowl too but that guy hes only about the money some people say... he ha big ideas of turning it around but i havent seen much changes except for having the best oiling machine on the island. 100k alley cleaner/oiler....
my dad used to tell me stories of bowling alleys all over the place, kalihi bowl, the place by OCC, all over...
lucky i got to bowl in all the bowling alleys here while am alive lol ....

Leeward, Aiea, Pali, that's it for the public ones. So many of them closed...Stadium (Isenberg), Kam, Sunset, the one on Lehua Ave., Kapiolani, Waipahu, Waianae (Nanakuli), the one across OCCC, Country Lanes(across the canal from HCC), Kalihi(?)(with the BIG bowling pin close to Middle St) and I think there was one in Kaneohe...and now Waialae(and I'm sure there's a bunch more I forgot about already). Sad. Could go from alley to alley, and you'd still have to wait for openings...no matter which alley you went to.

I actually wish I would be the owner of the LAST bowling alley here...
That should be a money-maker.

Sad to see most of the public bowling alleys closing. Kam bowl is already demolished and Walgreens would be taking up shop there.

One of the owners of Leeward bowl is the former owner of Hawaiian Brians.

yeah, heard about the alley closing, never got to bowl there, bowled on every lane except for that one, jackpots are the closest thing that we have to legal gambling. Aiea is still a good place to go, they renovated and the owner is really investing to make the place nice. They have a good restaurant also, if you guys go there you got to try the tasty chicken or the teri beef guarantee winnahs.

It is so sad to see so many of the alleys closing down... I can remember all the placed I have bowled at... by dad was an avid league bowler until his knee finally made him stop I bowled for about 10 years and just go maybe once a year now...
But I remember the old places that have since closed...
Classic Bowl (or was it Classic Lanes on Dillingham)
Country Lanes (Love those no-tap tournaments there...)
Ewa Bowl (high game shot there 269, and first 700 series)
Kalihi Bowl
Kam Bowl
Kapiolani Bowl (Oxtail soup!)
Kaimuki Bowl (Bowled there once)
Stadium Bowl-a-Drome (My dad's first leauge, I hated the above ground ball returns)
Waialae Bowl
Windward Bowl

Yup I use to bowl at waialae that was my house. So sad to see it closed, I don't even know why so many are closing all the leagues and the senior citizens bowling. My parents had to move leagues to Aiea now.

just the other day my son said, "Dad that looks like a bowling alley" (used to be Classic on Dillingham); I told him that, "it was! and I used to go there with my friends to hang out when I was in intermediate & high school." Although I didn't bowl then, it was still a cool place to hang out with my friends.
I remember Kapiolani, Kamehameha, Kalihi...
I need to visit Aiea Bowl... soon. Son is interested in bowling (finally) now.
