am thinking about replacing my clutch on my corolla soon since its slipping not that bad but its getting worse. stupid toyota put in a cheapo clutch on my hi-rev motor and clutch was never made to hold that so am probably going after market and get a new fly wheel. i have never done a clutch job but am looking fowards to it. or i might take it to a shop anyone know of any good places good with toyotas? am also looking at a LSD for it and that takes a lot of work and special tools i dont have so i might get it down at once.

any guys know of a good shop?

bwahah. X_X it was a crazy job, but seriously was fun...i learned so much from that thing..lol, i had like a question every hour here! also had a LOT of help from people to help lift the thing in...

im guessing ou have the corolla XRS! :] lots and lots of brake cleaner too..cuz when my clutch was previously done, they didnt clean it good..and i had to spray it down so much...

i also found out recently that i was supposed to change my slave+ master...with the clutch change! (only my camaro.. something about it being self bleeding, cheap~100bucks or so.. )

I do that kinda work.

Recently I found a pressure plate out of balance that caused an engine vibration. Never thought that they can get on the market that way, so now I check every pressure plate to make sure it is balanced.

^serious? how do you check for balance? im gonna re-do the clutch again, in a year or so, hopefully... x_x. gonna put newer, better parts in there...

Aren't you an aspiring technician? How can you let another technician work on your car? :p Live with it for 6-8 months until you're in the 2nd semester at HCC (manual and automatic trans)

RWD platforms are much easier to work on than FWD vehicles. I replaced the clutches on both my RSX-S and 240sx, and they're night and day by comparison

yeah i know i think i should wait a little while and build up my parts bin i guess? lol

have taken apart 1 transmission in my life ( and it wasnt fully broken down), and installed the same one ...was a ***** without a lift and slope drive way ..

i helped my dad do a clutch when i was real young in a b2200 but that was simple compared to fwd i think

I have a static bubble balancer. Hey, I use it to balance the wheels on our racecars and they go 125 with no vibration.

i did a backyard trans/clutch swap on my friends civic last weekend. it has like 200,000 miles on it. the inner race of the pilot bearing fell out when i dropped the trans. the trans (which was slipping out of gear and making noise) was leaking fluid from the shaft contaminating the flywheel and the semi-new clutch causing it to slip. the bearings were totally disintergrated and/or missing in action. i think i found ONE in a corner of the case... one shiney little ball :hihi:

i'm just sharing, i usually don't work on other people's cars unless they are hot chicks... and when i do, its for free. i feel i'm doing a service to the hot chick community :hand:

doing a clutch its not a hard job to do if you are sure of what you are doing, front or rear or all wheel drive. like Tom points out, think of the flywheel like a brake drum or disc. if it is not machined properly, or is out of its clearances and balance due to wear, you will feel vibrations.

do not neglect the pilot bushing/bearing. a bushing is cheaper and the bearing is about $10. that and resurfacing/checking the flywheel is cheap assurance to getting the job done properly if you do it yourself or not :D

there's a cheap way and the right way... if this is a work truck and you don't care if it breaks all the time and the only problem is the clutch disc itself.. i would opt to just change the disc because its cheap. if this was a car i depend on, then i would do the job right and take the time to inspect other things like the back of the engine to see the condition of the freeze plugs and/or oil plugs and the condition of the oil seals on the engine because NOW is a good time to get in there while the trans is out.

sometimes i just pull the whole engine trans assembly because it makes life easier... LOL.

^nice. x_x good luck on the clutch man...idk if id be of any help, but id be willing to come by and help a bit if ya need some.. :] - if my midterms and stuff allow.. bleah! x_x

yeah, and im sure the fwd is a hella lot harder unless you pull the engine..which will suck cuz of all the electronics hooked up to it! X_X. the thought has crossed my mind about my engine tho...

here's an easy trick/shortcut i use with FWD and the driveshafts..

alot of times you can just pop the lower ball joint off (only one, usually the lower) and the steering knuckle and swing the entire assembly out of the way after releasing the axles from the transmission case without disconnecting anything else. besides not having to take off the brake calipers and stuff, you also don't have to mess with the axle nut on the disc hub, which needs to be replaced if its the kind that you have to smash the end to lock it on the shaft..

if you are ever going to remove an engine/trans together and you have to unplug all the EFI stuff at the sensors/engine leaving the harness behind, label EVERYTHING you can and maybe take a couple of high def pics incase you have a brain fart and forget where everything went. :photo:

maybe my clutch needs to get bleeded...been getting some weird events this week. must have air inside i dont know how that would be possible on a 2 year old car but it happens i guess.

or maybe its just my motor mounts breaking in more....

how is the thing slipping? just not grabbing as hard anymore?

when i did mine, the clutch i pulled out actually had a LOT of friction material left... it was just dirt and shiet in it... and some grease, i thik from the previous install? it was just caked and nasty.

uh... if it's starting to give me some trouble putting it in 2nd gear?... is this one of the telltale signs of needed a clutch job?... (i know sounds duh... but seriously. i want to confirm if yes or no. tyvm.)
