So thinking about Kadena, Yokosuka, and Yokota, and Tom's thread about our old cars (especially seeing that Tom owned a Celica GTV!) got me thinking about the old school cars in Japan. This may turn into a Bill/Tom/Dirk thread, if it does I apologize ahead of time, but what's your favorite old school Japanese cars (and I'm not talking about fairly 'new' cars like the R32/R34SkaG - though the hakosuka in Latka's gallery is nice)?

[Edit : How about old school Japanese cartoons too?]

OMG...now your bringing back some memories. Tiger Mask! Ha, Ha, Ha! You remember Saru no Gundan? Didn't watch TV much, but listened to some music. Still remember some of the "Kamen Rider" song: Semaruuuuu shokaaa gigoku no gunnndan.....

I listened to some Japanese groups:
Chanels (great for cruising. Even went to their concert once)
Southern Allstars (Itoshi No Eri? This is where my daughter got here middle name, Erika)
Terao Akira (remember the Regno commercials and chain smoking Mild Seven?)

Back to cars. My favorite was the first gen RX7. To me it just seemed to be ahead of it's time. In Oki it was a toss up between RX7's and Skyline's. 280Z's were a little out of our reach and GTR's & Toyota 2000GT's where just a fantasy. I also really liked the Savanna GR (4 door model). My friend had one. It was gun medal grey with 7x14 & 7.5x14 wheels. It just looked so balanced. And the 12A rotory w/exhaust sounded so punchy.

Yeah 1st gen RX7s were something else. We had a Japanese kid (dentist's son with some kind of on-base connection) that came in his Junior year and he had a RX7. Evidently he was Black Emperor and got kicked out of every school he went to off-base - he couldn't speak a word of English (in fact I don't think he graduated). He tried to pull-off his Black Emperor attitude to us but we reminded him that zokus aren't crap without their 20+ buddies. We were so surprised that he was actually somebody with the Black Emperors. Hahaha.

Oh man, Southern All Stars all the way. I still like them. My murasaki banna was the oddball in Shonan/Chigasaki with the surf rack on top. Lol. Itoshi no Eri was my karaoke song man!

Chanels...another good one. I have this old video of a program called Rats-n-star -vs- Chanel......they did a concert together. You know what happened to most of them right? Sad and stupid.

Do you remember Yokohama Ginbai's Tsuppari High School Rock-n-roll? We use to blast that on-base. Off-base it was American rock. Lol!

I don't think they went all the way to Okinawa but Black Emperor was the biggest and strongest bosouzoku, in the Kanto area.

In the Shonan area, it was a tossup btwn Black Emperor :3: and Piero until there was a huge rumble at the Yuigahama Beach parking lot. Prety sure BE won that one. Anyway, here's a website for BE memorabilia:
http://www.blackemperor.jp/index2.html

Music faves are:
Rock and Roll :rocking: genre:
Downtown Boogie Woogie Band
Carol
Kools
Yazawa Eikichi
Yokohama Ginbae

Never did like Southern All Stars too much, but I did puchase one CD just for Itoshi no Eri. Better yet, I have the Ray Charles version of it titled Ellie, my Love.

More general music :drummer: I like is below, together with my fave song by them:

Pedro and Capricious (Gobangai mo Marii)
Hi Fi Set (Ame no Station)
Yamshita Tatsuro (Get Back in Love)
Kadomatsu Toshiki (Take You to the Sky High)
Takeuchi Mariya (September)
Alice (Tohku de Kiteki wo Kikinagara)
Tanimura Shinji (Gunjyoh)

I also have about half of Tube's yearly CD's since about 1991.

Interestingly enough. my most recent purchases are both Okinawa performers, and my Mom is who told me about them. Aragaki Tsutomu is actually konketsu, but he and his mother were abandoned by the father. Blinded at birth, he trained to become a classical opera singer and now in addition does "natsumero" stuff from our era. Natsukawa Rimi has a beautiful voice and does Okinawa type songs. She does an AWESOME version of "Shima Uta." I guess since the culture in Okinawa s a bit more free than that of mainland Japan, you get a lot more talent out of that little island. Witness TRF, Amuro Namie, etc.

Bill,

You are for sure the Kamakura Kid! You hit the nostalgia jackpot with the Black Emperor site! I actually had a CRS sticker on my car that was similar to the yellow (mine wasn't yellow) CRS Sticker in the gallery (except mine said Route 16 instead of Route 20?). Remember those acrylic pieces that use fit in the upper part of your windshield that was basically removable a tint strip? We use to tuck our stickers underneath there.

Piero....ah yes, I think they actually teamed up with CRS eventually; definitely smaller than Emperor. I think Piero punks use to mess with my car parked in Shonan while it was parked near the beach. I was told to stick a Black Emperor sticker in the tint strip and magically my car was untouched and no body blocked me in any more either. :3: Lol.

I have a great Eikichi story (this happened in LA many years ago) to tell you guys one day over beer or something. This'll tie-in into my Madonna story because both happened at Matsuhisa.

Okay, now I get it. BE boso gang. There was no real organized group in Oki when I was there. I heard there's some now. There's "Boso" and "Team Murder" from what understand from some of our drifters.

Oh man, you lost me with the music thing. I listened to mostly american pop mainly to here the sounds on my car stereo. What ever happened to component systems (compo)? Is it just me or do they make crappier car stereos nowadays? Same thing with home stereos, what's with this home theatre crap. What ever happened to Pre-amp/main-amp, 16 band equalizers, dbx, HPM1100's? Used to go to the PX just to test out all the stereo equipment, especially the speaker room. I started to build a stereo over here, but lost track. I have a pair of Bose 901's hooked up to some cheap amp made for audio/video. Does anybody know where to buy "quality" stereo equipment? I tried looking online one time with no luck.

Was the Southern Allstars "Itoshi no Eri" a remake from Ray Charles?

My Uncle had an original Mitsu GTO with the fender flares. Back then (1970's) it was cool to run the car without the front grill. I have a picture of it, I'll have to dig up.

Ray Charles remade the Souther All Stars song. Words aren't exact but close.

Clarion G Series! Worked summer-hire on-base to buy it. Hahaha. Worked busing tables to get 901s too. Hahaha.

Unforunately I can't get on base any more, so I haven't checked out the Bose room. Miki and I bought the 901's right after we were married, so they're about 6 years old now. Ordered them online through AAFES. We thought we were getting the whole set, but apparently they sell the equalizer seperately. Not knowing i plugged them in and I'm telling Miki, listen how good they sound! Miki's like, they don't sound as good as you say, Tom! Found out later you NEED the equalizer for them to work properly. So I bought the equalizer locally and the speakers came to life. The great thing about these speakers is they're load, but they're also easy on your ears.

Hey, maybe sometime in April we should have a OMB natsukashi party. Meet somewhere, cook some yakisoba, listen to period music, etc.

Unfortunately, I purged my VHS tape collection:smiley_on_tredmil: a few years back so I don't have any more Red/White New years Eve Song Festival tapes anymore, but I did discover:
The Drifters
Be Bop High School
Area 88 pt 2
Bari Bari Densetsu pt 1

Also a good tape of the WRC Group B cars 83-86

I can also burn and bring over all the Space Battleship Yamato movies, and Galaxy Express 999. Unfortunately my region free DVD player spit a belt, otherwise I'd have a couple Lupin III movies, too. If anime is not to your liking, I also have some Japanese WW2 flicks, namely Taiheiyoh no Arashi and Rengoh Kantai.

Various and sundry samurai TV movies.

And, although I kind of hate to admit this, I have 2 Moritaka Chisato:gapteeth: concert movies. I like to watch them with the sound turned off, playing Takeuchi Mariya on a CD player instead.

Last but not least, for those of you whom read about my favorite race queen Nanamori Mie and the TV program Miniskirt Police, I have a few tapes of those, too. Those are actually mid 90's but who cares, she's a Japanese hottie.

Used to be the military (i.e. samurai) capital of Japan from 1192 to 1333, so there are some good stories floating around to include one of the original "Dance for me, bit*%!" scenarios, otherwise known as Shizuka no Mai (Shizuka's Dance).

Wow, mainland Japan seemed to be very different the Oki. I never heard of rival gangs. Most of us just tuned our cars and had fun on the street (no winning pink slips). We did 2 things: drag raced (sometimes for miles, running red lights and all) and carving up mountain roads (this was before drifting). Actually, there was one more: we would actually go to an open field and try to drift our cars around. We never thought it possible to practice on the asphalt. That would be crazy.

No, I don't have the Ray Charles version DK. But, I would appreciate a copy. I think is the first time I've ever heard of an American Icon remaking a Japanese song. Oh no wait....sukiyaki (was it A Taste of Honey?)

If you guys are planning on being at this SLS, maybe we could hang out afterwards and tell stories over beer? Oh, warning, bring some mosquito repellent. With all this rain, they're swarming around here. Usually I burn a dozen or so Katorisenkos, that keeps them away.

I burned a copy of "Ellie My Love" by Ray Charles for you. There is an instrumental version on the single CD too so you can karaoke it for your daughter. Hey remember those Dunlop Racing tires? You know the ones that have that yellow mark on the side wall? This is the '80 RX7 I was working on. I put a set of Speed Star Mark 1's (used, naturally) on the rears with the Dunlop Racings. I was searching for the fronts to match. Anyhow, these tires, when they get hot, grip like hell. With the Dunlops in the rears and regular tires in the front I was gripping it one night on one of the winding mountain roads (in Oki, mind you) and understeered right into the outside concrete curb. Bent the left front control arm and broke a left rear wheel bearing. Surprisingly the wheel didn't bend. Way to go SSR's.

Wasn't into cars that much back then, primarily bikes. The lustworthy bike tire back then was the Dunlop TT100. I think in the US they were called K81's. Very distinctive tread pattern, my heart still goes a bit pitter patter when I see an old pic of a bike with TT100's. One of my first LP purchases was Santa Esmeralda's House of the Rising Sun. The bike in the cover photo had TT100's on. I still remember that!

Hey, that was great fun! Vocabulary lessons and all.

Also neat to finally meet Latka, and see the "really tall guy inside really small car" dichotomy for myself. I thought me squeezed into my Brunei buddy's Mini must have been an amazing sight, if Latka showed up in Brunei in his Mini, the locals would be singing songs about that up in the hills.:djcelebrate:

We really should follow up with a OMB natsukashii party sometime. A forgiving restaurant or someone's place. I wonder if any karaoke box places let you bring your own DVD's? Not that I'm into karaoke (I actually hate it) but I have other, more interesting things to watch. Moritaka Chisato:lovesmiley: (best legs in Japan, circa mid to late 80's) concert perhaps, or maybe even some episodes of Miniskirt Police:biggrinking: featuring Nanamori Mie  and two other hottie race queens. Hmm, I guess in order to keep AAX happy I'll need to find some Chisato links with pix. http://www.idollica.com/moritaka/MoritakaChisato.html

When I got home though, I felt so lousy from the DEET that I got "excused" from dinner and took a bath and hit the sack.

Definitely have to do it again so I can bring all of my Kathy M. related photo books for Tom to check-out.

Tom (and rest of SLS crew) - thanks for letting us sit-in on your "after the day" BS session. Kind of saw a defferent side of everyone so it was pretty cool.

No worries.

Hey, maybe you oughta try regular Skin So Soft (not the version with bug repellant mixed in) for the mozzies. I know in the South they say SSS is an effective bug repellant. I tried SSS in South Carolina, didn't work so good against the no-see-ums, but in Kailua it worked against the mozzies.
Worth a shot, beats getting sick.

Ach! Skin So Soft...that's right! I forgot about that one.

It was a blast meeting you guys yesterday. I would have loved to stick around and hear the tall tales but I had to get back home 'cause I worked at 3am today. Blech.

I'll keep my eyes open here on HT though for any upcoming BS session. :)

Hey guys...anytime with the BS session.

It was a pleasure to finally meet you DK and to see you again KK. You guys are always welcome (if you dare) to join us anytime.

There's one more week of classes and activities to go. Been so busy lately, I really haven't had the chance to think about what we'll be doing when we finally get shut down. I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to think about it after we close for business at the track.

REH:

I think I left my 7/11 umbrella propped up against the fence near the bleachers. If it's still lying around out there, please throw it over by AAX's engine. I'll pick it up later this week when I go help him out.

If its gone, no big deal.

I tried that before.....very oily.....got eaten up.

I should've stuck with the "family" stuff (smells like watermelon) as that works OK for me but I thought I would get eaten up so I used both the "outdoorsman" one and the 100% DEET and paid for it (and fricken' still got three bites). Akshamiyo!

REH: With your nihongo ability and experience dealing with tourists, I would think you could find a job pretty easy here. Might not be what you want, but oughta pay bills while you figure out what it is you really want to do. I even thought about driving the Waikele trolley had I decided to stay here for school.

No, no, just very few words. Don't know that one. My friend who grew-up in Okinawa use to always say Akshamiyo.

It 's the same word. Just people have different ways of saying it. Here's some more: Akichabiyo or hakisabiyo. I don't know exacly what it means, but when us Americans give this gesture, we're saying f**k or s**t. You say it lightly, it's like "come on".

What's your friends name from Oki and what year did he grad? I might know him...small place ya know.

You mean it being one word said different ways right? That's why I said "sort of". Hahaha.

My friend is Robert Satoshi Usher (one or two years older but same grad year cause he went to Japanese school K~1). I think he was only elementary school in Okinawa. His mom was Okinawan and they lived at Yokota a couple of times (now in Seatle area).

BTW, my friend who's Middle School yearbook had Kathy Mc was Lewis Bowman ('81). Oh, and a YHS guy who moved to Okinawa was Mike Wiltuck - he didn't graduate so he may have gone to Kubasaki for '82. Know any of these guys?

Only Okinawan I know is something like:

Unjyu ippe chuura kahgi yai bin yai.

Some JMSDF folks told me it means "you are a beatuiful girl" or something like that.

For all I know it could mean "I am a stupid frickin furriner with a brain the size of a microbe."

Speaking of being a baka-gaijin:freakout: , here's the website with the Bakagaijin shirts, along with:

Barbarian US soldier:army2:
No foreigners allowed:shocked:
Looking for Japanese girlfriend:lovesmiley:
Seppuku prohibited:belokan:

plus various and sundry other T shirts, and even more wacky stuff.

Names don't sound familiar. But, I remember a few folks that lived in both Mainland Japan and Okinawa.

My Okinawan is just as bad if not worse than my Japanese. I know chirakagi means good looking. Yanakagi means ugly by the way.

Hooray!

Just got word from CD-Japan. My boxed set of all 42 episodes of the Captain Harlock TV series is on its way!

Love them Mazone, brings a whole new meaning to the words "vegetarian chick."

Man, I wish it would quit raining...:undertheweather:

Just finished a marathon 21 hour session (interrupted only for meals and sleep) of watching the entire Captain Harlock TV series. All 42 episodes.

Wow, still can't believe I did that.

Trouble was, back in 1978 I really got into the series, but then my family uprooted for the summer to a campground near Mt Fuji. No TV on a regular basis, so I missed about three months worth of episodes. I knew how the series ended, but hadn't a clue about what happened leading up to it. This was before VCR's were commonplace.

Now, after 27 years, I finally know.
