Standby. Lois will be with you soon to answer your question. :sun_smiley:

I believe you are allowed 1 inch larger to 1 inch smaller and recon isn't needed.
Multiple rim sizes though that are out of that range... its a really good question and I'd like to know too! Lois?

I'm pretty sure it's 1" larger in diameter and 1.5" wider in sectional width are allowed with no recon; i.e. if the stock wheel was 14x5.5, the max allowable with no recon would be a very-common 15x7. If you get recon with a certain size wheel (say 17") and you happen to get pulled over for whatever reason (like a moving violation), if the cop decides to check your recon certificate, you may get a ticket if you're running a different size aftermarket wheel (say 16" or 18") at the time of the traffic stop.

I think Lois might want to chime in regarding having to do multiple recon updates if the registered owner of the vehicle owns multiple sets of wheels he plans to use on the street. I know this is a question I'd like answered, as I'm kind of a wheel-whore myself (slowly recovering though).

1.5 and 1.5, diameter and width.

what is stated on the recon paper is what should be on the car, so yes, if you do multiple swaps and you get pulled over and the rims on the car happen to not be the one stated on the paper...your recon permit will, in all likelihood, be voided and confiscated.

So if I have recon for 18s, but want to switch to 17s (which are still 2" wider diameter than stock), I have to get re-reconned for the 17s then, right? Will the updated recon paperwork reflect that I am now approved to run both 17s and 18s then?

that sucks big time and waste of time if you ask me to go and update recon every single time i change my wheel. i work everyday M-F 8:30-5:30 i don't even have time to go to recon to go and update it. my stock wheels were 13x5.5 and my wheels range from 14x6, 15x6.5, 15x7, 16x7, and 16x7.5. when i got my recon i had my 14x6 wheels on.

...what about tire size? does tire size really matter also say i have 205/50/15 and latter i decide to change it to 195/50/15 or i decide to go 195/45/15 will this void my recon as well??

can i have mutiple copies of the recon paper with different size rims with different size tires on each copy. so if a cop pulls me over i can show him what size tire and rim i have? will the recon station do that? cause i'm not adjusting my height i'm just switching wheels. or can i list all my wheels and tire size on the recon paper?

Yeah, I have like 8 sets of rims... but legally, i'd need to get a new recon each time i change them? wtf!!

ok, why do you guys need to change your wheels all the time?

they're WHEELS ffs, not freaking underwear.

the answer to all of the above is NO.

PICK A TIRE. ANY TIRE. BUT KEEP IT.

Everytime there's an autox, I change my tires.
I have two sets of race rim/tire sets, 15x8 with 225/50/15, 15x9 with 275/35/15
Then I have my stock rims, 17x7 205/40/17.
Then I have my lightweight rims with better tires 15x7, 205/50/15.
Then I have random other rims that I don't know why I have, but trying to sell.

But anyway, even if I wanted to, I'd have at least two sets of rims. One for race and one for the street. I don't want to get pulled over while driving to the race on my race tires just for having different rims... kinda dumb law.

can't you change them in the pit? just curious.

when we raced we had a trailer, i just can't see why it can't be done without getting into trouble. if you don't have a trailer (and yes, not everyone has the space or $ to have one), then change it at the race.

i mean, that's what we used to do.

I think I've seen cory do it in the pit.
Hey Cory wear can I get a tire pressure gauge that is decent for maintaining pressure in the grid. I always see you with one.

lol, try and carry 4 tires that are 15x9 and 275 in width in a miata!!! as well as a jack and tools. plus i carry the tech tent. i have my gf's car, but she won't always come, so i just change em at my parents house and drive it there and back.

i have, but its such a pain in the ass.
1. Arrive at 6:30am, set up tech tent and take all the stuff out of my car.
2. Usually about 20 min to change all 4 tires.
3. Tech 125 cars.
4. Race.
5. Change back tires.
6. Take down tech tent, clean up, put everything back in the car.

So, I change the tires at home the day before, and change them back the day (or week) after. I don't drive the car usually, so I can be lazy.

For the gauge, I got this one:

The 60psi max one. Very good gauge!

well sorry but i can't do anything about that...we'd have a truck to carry all that crap that we needed. you don't have a racing buddy that pits with you?

i helped him pack ALL the stuff we needed into the Bronco, i helped him with any pit mechanics crap that needed to be done, and i helped him push the bug up to the line.

maybe...

(get a new girlfriend) :hihi:

No way, she comes out to race, she allows me to spend ungodly amounts of time and money on my car, and she's mechanically inclined! Couldn't ask for a better friend, let alone girlfriend! :D :D :D

i know its just wheels but its just like shoes...you change them all the time to look different.

i guess..i would have to try and go to recon evertime i change my wheels. hopefully they get tired and hopefully they can make a petition to change that part in the recon books.

hey lois, is there a way where we can make a petition to change some parts of the recon law, like how the license plate law got thrown out?
