It's almost 7:30am, and I'm watching the news on KITV. They were talking about the new speeding law and how you can be fined, face jail time, etc... and they finish it with a shot of some guy drifting at the stadium.

Nice. Jackasses. :gkf_viking: Drifting at an event does not equal speeding on public roads.

Neat.. so 30 over is like a felony or something now?

They won't catch me Ridin Dirty.

What the hell...how come they're always giving drifting such a bad rap. I mean, even when it's in a controlled event like at the stadium, they're still giving us grief.

It's the public perception, and obviously KITV doesn't give a rat's azz about what image they're giving.

No, it's a petty misdemeanor. What suprises me is that you can actually get jail time on a first offense. Not like jails are stuffed enough out here already. Granted, if you get caught doing 30+ you're either stupid or not very aware of your surroundings... or both.

I don't mind the law really, because I don't speed like that...but damn, the way they did the news story ticks me off.

Yea if you're already going that fast you might as well keep going.

:) This might motivate me to buy a V1.

Is that thing good against laser? I'm sure they're using laser already, right?

The Valentine V1 has always received good reviews. It's only going to help you if you're in a pack (not the lead vehicle) and you catch the edge of the beam or something. If you're cresting a hill by yourself... it'll be a good ticket warning device. "Ding! You just got a ticket" :D

Thankfully HPD is lazy. 9 times out of 10 they set up in the same spots. As long as you prepare for those you're pretty sure that you can avoid a ticket.

...back when I was an MP in the Marine Corps we used to take great joy in setting up ambushes. One car would pull over someone... people would speed by thinking they were safe - muhahaha... right into the next radar gun. ;) We'd hide our cars behind bushes and pull the radar cord through 'em. hahahhaa... hey, we were bored.

Seems Hawaii has switched to all laser now. Because of the types of roads we have here, when dealing with laser, none of the radar detectors seem to provide great results; however, if you are driving in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, etc., the V1 is AWESOME. When I use to commute to Vegas I had my ass saved many times. Also on a trip to the Grand Canyon, from Orange County, I could detect stray laser signals from two crests before the mappo was shooting.

The detector isn't illegal in Hawaii - but a jammer of any type is most definitely illegal. Besides - if a cop is aiming his laser or radar gun at you there are a series of steps that he or she has already gone through - part of my certification to use a radar gun (in the 90s) was to first estimate the speed. You had to be able to estimate a vehicle's speed within 3mph several times in order to get certified...anyway - so let's say I guess that you're doing 70 in a 55mph zone. I bring my gun up and try to clock you but the reading is all over the place. You're still going to get pulled over, and THEN on top of a ticket you're going to be facing a cop looking for whatever jammed his gun.

It's all about *not* attracting attention to yourself.

Yeah...I've got the certification for the CHP Laser/Radar test laying around here somewhere. I imagine it's expired by now, though, along with my memory. :hihi:

ok...question...can you laser when its raining?
could the laser refract off of rain drops and get off readings?

A laser "gun" is shooting light...which can be both refracted and reflected by water. Drops of water are just cool little prisims. :)

Theoretically it should give wacky readings if anything. I used to know the specs of some of the guns, but I know at a typical distance (under 1/4 mile or so) the beam from the laser gun is about 8 feet wide. - well, at least as wide as the front of el Jalope.

You know, your old V1 has only gone off a few time in 3 years. One time it was 2 am and I'm doing 35 mph down Kal hwy. Cop sees me, stands on top of something then guns me.

On the matter of laser jammers....

My understanding is that owning a laser jammer and even installing it on your car is not illegal, but there's a law about "interference with an officer in the execution of his/her duties" that would apply. The problem for the prosecutor is that they'd have to prove -- beyond a reasonable doubt -- that your laser jammer was used in such a manner.
