i got the word.
even if you had recon, and wheel size in and of itself is no longer a recon issue, if you change from what is denoted on the recon paper, you can STILL get your recon invalidated.

this was originally brought up on PostJunky.com

Guess that means I'll need to buy the same sized rims for street and race use!
15x9's all the way around hahaha

Actually, does width matter?
If not, then all I got are 15" rims in different widths.. 15x7, 15x8, 15x9!

i don't think that the widths the problem i think its the tire size.

Hmmm, so the tire rule still applys where the recon is invalid if you have a different size tire than the one stated on your papers?

^question posed on PostJunky

my answer:

hmmmm good question!

i will look into this. i've posed the question and HPD will ultimately have to follow their directives regarding the issue of wheels/tire sizes and its documentation on older recon papers.

off the top of my head i would think that it is a non-issue, now,...HOWEVER.

do not forget that it is not only a matter of the tire sizes' actual documentation on the paper itself, but how different sized tires than what is stated on it, affects ride height, bumper height, etc. (the WHOLE picture) so in that sense i CAN see different tires sizes still being a factor in invalidating one's recon paper.

i hope that makes sense. :D

so i asked, they discussed, and the answer is what i suspected.

because, even though wheels in and of itself is not a recon item anymore, when one does go in for recon, the ride height and wheel/tire sizes are still denoted on the recon document.

ok people are asking me stuff about the wheel stuff and i'm way too lazy to retype shiet, so whatever i typed before elsewhere, i am just gonna cut and paste here.

ok, someone asked me this in PM, so i thought it would help you guys if i just answered it out here.

So the law did not change, its just an administrative matter now that Recon does not care about the wheel diameter size?

or did the law change?

just curious as to how to address getting safety check and how safety check stations would know.

the rules for recon fall under HAR, because it is administrative.

in one part of the section it says the Director has the authority to waive whatever rule he sees fit. there is no legislation involved.

the DOT has the responsibility to inform the safety check stations--so hopefully they did not drop the ball.

if any of you have problems, have the station call 733-2542.

Heather, no, you will not get/require any paperwork...they do not issue the "no recon required" paperwork anymore and haven't been for a while.

Gilberto--lemme tell you, it's laziness on administration's part--me and Mr. T argued about how stupid it was to repeal it--think of all the fcuken dummies that are going to put hugely oversized rims on their vehicles now--and don't upgrade their brakes or whatnot? i foresee many more accidents due to inability to stop in time.

i shake my head, but whatev.

Thanks lois!
Looks like I could get away with keeping the same diameter rims but having different widths. What sucks is the tire size... they don't make 275mm wide street tires. hey, maybe i can fake the writing on the sidewall to say 225! :D

you know, most of you just drive it to the track when you change it (to race), right? and then change it back to original (i.e. what's written on the recon paper).

pfffft, it's ALMOST a non-issue, IMHO. as long as you guys don't go to Waikiki and burn out in front of Mike Hunt right after Auto-X, you should be fine

i think that's how most people used to do it, at least waaay back in the day. just load up the rear seat/trunk with your race rims/tires, swap them out there, runumhard, and then swap back for the drive home.

unless you're driving home on something you didn't have when you got your recon, you should be okay, no?

yeah you should be okay, but guys like *AHEM* corytomo sometimes don't have enough room for tires (Miata) and no pit crew to haul tires, so it is done beforehand. :D

Maybe I just have a problem with reading comprehension but I still don't quite understand the change in this.

Just so I understand, I have 18" rims (stock rims size was 16" but there is a different trim of the altima that comes with 18's, if that matters) and a catback exhaust.

Do I need recon?

hehehe my next step is to buy a small trailer so i can strap them on, go to the track, change tires, and put them back onto the trailer when im done! then i'll have no worries!

well, i guess it doesn't matter much since i'm probably not going to bother getting recon unless i get pulled over... and then i'd need to change the one thing that requires recon (suspension) anyway because with 800lb springs, you won't be able to bounce the car 2"!

So what's the problem for people who autox? Does it only pertain to people who already have recon for other modifications?

^ lol, i think you missed the other thread thats why... they were asking what woujld happen if they had a few diff sized rims, one for autox, one for daily..etc etc....and lois pointed out on this thread that the recon is for a single rim size.........:p

i think you can fit them all in there, i kinda remember someone with a miata showing up at the old auto-x site with two tires in the passenger seat and two in the trunk, with the trunk lid held down with bungee cord. he'd swap them out at the track and for the drive home.

Nah, even my 225/50/15 tires would not even fit in the trunk. It would be resting on the weather stripping. 275's... no way. If I took the passenger seat out even, the tire still wouldn't be able to fit on the passenger side with the door closed. Come out to autox next month and I'll show you what I mean! Stupid tiny cars...

That would be Avery.

I always put two in the pax seat, and tie two more across the back under the rollbar. If it rained, I got wet.

you need a pit crew

ayup. preferably someone with a truck, van, or large suv.

our friend with a suburban got pressed into parts car/pit car duty if he didn't bring his camaro to the track - people put all their spare tires, parts, extra NOS bottles, etc... into his 'burban and we all headed out to the track.

funny - he started to use his camaro a lot more after a couple nights like that...
