The recall info for that particular honda civic.

I remember way back (when we were still on Oahu) my '90 Civic died. Just died. No warning, nothing. Just wouldn't start or even "bump" (crank easily, but guarans no spark, smell gas already).

Well, turns out that an "igniter" (I dunno if that's referring to the ignition coil/ distributor/ transistorized/ computerized ignition system) was under a recall for replacement with no charge... turns out that my car was one of those.

They happily (Pfleuger Honda if I recall) replaced the part (never got to see it), but I still had to pay out my wazoo for towing.

My car is still happily running on Oahu (well it lives in my parent's covered garage). :)

i just called Honda and they show the part in stock, and it's not too bad (employee price $85). but for that particular year they don't show that recall already.

oh well, we'll see when i get home.

thanks Kyle

yep, might be the igniter inside the distributor, might also check the coil for resistance. if those are ok, your culprit could be the main relay. but make sure you have spark first. relay could keep the fuel pump from priming. when you turn the key to on, you should be able to hear the fuel pump priming, if you don't, check fuse and relay.

my guess would be the ignitor. the 4G civics were notorious for that. my '88 civic would repeatedly die, stall, or not start intermittently. after we replaced the ignitor, all was well.

second guess would be fuel. got gas? a couple of times were were stymied by a no-start issue, then on a whim, we just put a can of gas in there and it started right up. turned out our friend's fuel gauge was busted and stuck on 1/2 tank.

haaah, so we go out to look at the car. i take off one of the spark plug boots and ground it, the car starts right up. Mr T looks at me like :weirdo:

if this starts doing it again, i can get an igniter @ employee price.

he DOES have an aftermarket alarm in it, too.

how intermittent was your intermittent?

we're just doing some minor research (Mr. T is also looking up info on that car alarm system he has).

we didn't look in the distributor yet.

for our reference

about once every couple of weeks or so, no real precipitating factors (high humidity, high temps, etc...).

it would either die while driving, or simply refuse to start. crank, but no start, fuel in the tank.

if you wait awhile, it would start back up without having to do anything to it, and it'd be fine for another couple of weeks.

when my mother's car was having starting problems, we determined that the aftermarket alarm was the source of the problem. one of the wires had come loose and grounded itself, so the starter would not engage (i.e., turn key and nothing happens). the other problem was that the factory alarm would get confused at this point, and go off.

For the Main Relay, you can actually take it apart and fix the soldering points. As the car ages, the Main Relay solder points separates and you have the problem of car not starting in certain temperatures(usually when it's hot). I had to do this on my CRX and other Civics.

Mr. T and i did a lot of googling and asked a bunch of our Honda tech friends, and they concurred. and...the car did not start at a particularly hot time of the day.

when i got home, it was later in the afternoon, and hence no problem.

MR is cheap, we'll probably just swap it out.

thanks all!:fingersx:

Ahhhh...that must be why my Civic cranks longer if it's been sitting out in the sun for most of the day...versus starting it around 7 in the morning when it's cooler outside.
