View Full Version : Wheel Past Fender?

I am heading out to hawaii with the Navy in a couple months and noticed something that I have been unable to verify by searching concerning getting my car through a safety inspection.

Currently I have a fairly aggressive wheel offset on my s2000 and saw something stating that if my wheel stuck out past the fender of my car it would instantly fail a safety inspection.....

I really love my wheels, and don't really have the funds to get some new ones that would meet the requirement if that is still current....

Can anyone confirm if this will still prevent me from obtaining a safety inspection? Will I just need a recon sticker (not really sure how you get those) or do I have to get a whole new set of wheels?

It is really just barely sticking out.......

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

IIRC, to pass the recon inspection, the wheel/tire can't stick out more than 1/2" and absolutely cannot rub against any part of the fender, wheelwell, or suspension at full lock. It won't pass safety inspection without recon approval, so you need to go get recon. Did you keep your stock rims? Use those in the meantime while you wait for your recon appointment.

don't forget, wheel no longer a recon item in and of itself!

Justin did you do anything to your s2000 other than rims? if so, what?

Yes I have done some other stuff.

Cold air intake, header, exhaust (i have a silencer if sound might be a problem, it can be loud at WOT). Also have a VAFC2 air/fuel controller and put hood dampers so the hood opens by itself. Other than that just swapped out some of the emblems on the car....

I will have to go measure it, I am thinking it might be a full inch past the fender.

Unfortunately I did not retain the stock wheels because I have no storage space in the Navy barracks. Once I get out there I am hoping to find a place with a garage to rent, which would be great!

Is getting the recon just a matter of getting an appointment? Or would I still not pass with wheels sticking out beyond the fender? I have a motorcycle I could ride if I had to wait for an appointment.....

The Lifted truck guys rivet on plastic garden edging. Haha
I plan on running crazy offsets on my car too. I intend on rocking some 30mm flares.

well if you didn't touch your suspension i don't see you having a need for recon, at all.

you probably won't get safetied, though

So a recon can't make up for my wheels sticking past the fender? I gotta figure out if I need to make a trade before I move or not......

No suspension mods yet, thats happening once I get there :17_wink:

it was JUST changed. wheels are no longer a recon item.

if you plan on doing your suspension mods when you get here, then you'll need to make an appointment after you do them and you get an alignment. the alignment has to be within manufacturer's specs, and within 30 days of the appt.

ok, i verified in HAR...it ain't your tires that will fail, it's your fenders! HAHAHA :D

Cheapest solution may be to roll your fenders and see if you can stretch the metal beyond the tire. You might be able to put on narrower tires with a slight stretch to help fit with in the fender.

Hahahaaa... all the more reason for that wide-body kit!

Kind of funny they'd write the law like that when you can change the tires more easily than the fenders.

hmmm, i would love to do some nice looking flared fenders, just seems to be a pricey option to fix this problem........but I also love my wheels and hate what most other people put on this s2k's.......

have you soon anyone roll and stretch stock fenders? I would be down for that if it could be done for a more reasonable price.....

I did my last car with a baseball bat. Highly not reccommended if you wanna keep it nice but mine came out real good.

Post a pic of your wheel and fender.

When I'm done with my fender rolling, you can take a look! I hope it comes out ok, using an Eastwood fender roller. It needs to go out 1"..

Squeezing some 275mm wide tires on a miata... they aren't know for their wide fender clearances! :D
