Im here to ask a question on a car that my husband is thinking about buying so i dont exactly know all of the details. From what i know, he is buying a nissan skyline r34 gtt? im not sure if it is a kit car. Anyway, he is buying it from a company who ships the car from japan and basically makes it legal in the US. he told me to call the dmv and ask about registering a kit car which is why im guessing its a kit car. Supposedly they get a vin for the car and everything. if you know anything relating to this or anything that has to do with registering it please reply. im kinda out of the loop on this sort of thing.

Sorry, do not buy an R34. You will never get it registered here in Hawaii... even R33's are very hard to get legal, and the R33 is DOT and Federalized, WITH all the correct paperwork. There are threads on here that have links to the Department of Homeland Security cracking down on all R32 and R34's that are "legally" registered in America.

I wonder why the DOT/DMV hates these cars. It can't be a pollution issue either because there aren't that many people who can afford these things.

dude, it's not a personal "hate" issue.
these cars have not been crash tested to meet FMVSS standards, no matter what teh Intranetz sez.
Nissan Motor Company issued documents stating that certain year vehicles are not and will not come into compliance--it's such a convoluted story that i certainly can't reiterate it here. if i can get the doc url i will post it.
the local DOT head and Special Interest Vehicles inspector here have a treasure trove of who, where, when, what, why, and how these vehicles can't be registered here. and even if some idjit manages to try and pull a fast one, the registration can and HAS, in the past, been cancelled, revoked, and confiscated (enforced with HPD).

Sounds like the Kaizo way of importing http://www.kaizoindustries.com/uni/
They send you the body and you have to put it together. Similar to how they import the Noble cars into the US.
The following is the eligibility list

Make sure they are on that list. I don't see Kaizo on that list.
Motor Vehicle Control will check to see that the vehicle was properly imported and will collaborate with NHTSA about the legality of your car...especially if it is any type of Skyline :)

the legality of it getting here has nothing to do with one being ABLE to register it.
NHTSA has no jurisdiction over, or can force our local DMV or DOT to register the car regardless if it was brought in "legally".
the Kaizo ones here can be brough in as "parts" then assembled but cannot be registered as a kit car, as it was not manufactured before 1968.

I have no interest in importing these cars. But i would say that they are safer in crashes then the rusted out welds and kinked frame salvage vehicles being sold by some body shops(especially the korean lady up aiea,lol).

Which is why there should be no such thing as "salvage rebuilt" vehicles.
They should all be parts only and 1/2 the VIN removed to prevent them from seeing the road again.

I don't see why it is an issue and why they would be liable. A JDM car is not obligated to meet American FMVSS. That's why we have Registered Importers to make sure the vehicle meets US FMVSS

Such a vehicle that is less than 25 years old can only be lawfully imported into the U.S. if (1) it is determined eligible for importation by NHTSA and (2) it is imported by an RI or by a person who has a contract with an RI to bring the vehicle into compliance with all applicable FMVSS within 120 days of entry."

I guess no Ultima GTRs and Attack Roadsters can be registered in Hawaii...
I was wondering why I don't see many if not any of the newer style kit cars in Hawaii compared to the rest of the US

Also don't forget that if you do get it state "legal" but it isn't NHTSA legal, the federal government can revoke the registration and may seize the vehicle. Kinda like what corytomo mentioned

In most cases the vehicles were state registered, but homeland security came and seized the vehicle. They didn't have proper bond releases.

call 733-2542 and ask for the inspector who handles these cases
he can tell you every intricate detail, i'd have a hard time finishing a post like that telling you, i gotta get to work on time. :D

just do what im doing, tell your husband to get a kouki 240 and then just swap the engine from a gtr...lol
it might not have the look but it will have the power.

What makes the GTR good is both the power and being able to handle and control all the power easily. A better choice would be the R14 conversion

That way you get the GTR bottom end which is AWD and will be able to handle the power being put out. Normal RB26 swaps into a 240 requires 2WD conversion. Putting that much power to just 2 wheels can be very dangerous...
