HDR translates roughly to "how to ruin 99% of photographs out there in 3 simple letters" :)
I think it's funny when people post up car pictures in a parking lot...during the middle of the day and make HDR images out of them. Sure, HDR has it's usefulness, but it's not how the vast majority of people use it!

I agree. A lot of people use HDR and turn the luminosity extremely high because it looks "cool".
It's difficult to use HDR to make a picture appear natural, but when done correctly, I think it looks much better than any single exposure shot.
Here's my best attempt so far:

Hey...it's Andy! What up, dawg!
Cool pic, but honestly, I hate HDR because it makes everything look "fuzzy".

You're not call me Andy are you?
What do you mean by fuzzy? Everything looks pretty sharp to me, other than the motion blur on the water. Do you mean color noise? If so, I know what you are talking about. I do my best to hide it. Its usually only noticeable in smooth gradients, like the sky for example.
Here's another one i did that doesn't look too "fuzzy"

Actually, spike, I was talking to Latka...he's Andy. And I wasn't talking about your photo although, yeah, I can see the fuzziness. What I mean is that it's not clearly defined when it comes to edges when you use HDR. Everything has a soft glow about it, and there's no pure definition. It almost feels like it's "interpolated" I guess is a way to describe it.

here's a couple HDR images i made. they are over saturated bc i was going for that cool look, i'm still learning the ropes w/ the hdr stuff so be gentle w/ your critiques. i am using a nikon cool pics camera.

If you are using photomatix for the merge, trying playing around with the white and black points as well as the saturation blending to get rid of that glowing from foreground objects.
For the second photo, it looks a little grainy. Try increasing the micro-contrast smoothing. It could also be the picture being taken at a higher iso, since it appears that the natural lighting was probably a bit dark. If that's the case, use a tripod and set the iso to as low as your camera can go.
