View Full Version : Insane swap question!
So I own a 1987 BMW 325 and am giving it my friend, and were are splitting the cost on this process here mentioned.
We want to throw in a 13b single turbo lol. I'm positive the motor will fit, I just need to make custom engine mounts. My main concern is the drive train. I know it can be done, I have seen pictures of such swaps but no information. So all you RX gearheads out there...help? 0.0
please dont flame with why the hell would you do that posts. just want to know and we are serious about it. thanks :)

Quite honestly, I think it's a great idea. Sorry, I'm not a Bimmer owner, so I can't herlp there, but I'm sure there are ways/parts to mate and beef up the drivetrain. 13B bellhousing to custom Bimmer driveshaft?
Custom drive shaft was expected. As whell as custom trans mounts, I just don't know how about anything else.
I don't think I'll need custom axles since its already a RWD car. hhmmm anyone?

dalas if youre gonna throw in the 13b single turbo from the fc you might as well go balls out and do the fd tt motor. or be rediculous and end up in debt for the rest of your life and do a 3 rotor.any of those swaps would probably kill you though. i would say just work on the sti and save yourself a lot of heartache.
btw have fun at the warped tour asshole
ya i havent decided on the single turbo or twin not sure yet. cost isnt big deal we are splitting it.
and no warped tour due to stupid ****ing airport not letting me on the plane ;(

i assume you are transplanting eng & trans?... and if you have the fabrication skills, you can just about put any kind of drive train in any kind of vehicle making your own mounts. if there is a kit available, its usually super expensive.
i found out the driveshafts are relatively easy to modify, we had those guys in waipahu mate a Camaro shaft with a RX7 shaft using our measurements. i think it was Power Train Industries. they helped out by finding a larger u-joint for the rear to handle the power from the V8 transfer to the RX7 rear axle.
its fun to try and figure out how you are going to mate the computer, power steering, a/c, fuel, speedometer, tach and all the guages.. but its not fun when you don't have good schematics or diagrams of the existing wiring from BOTH vehicles to help you.
good luck to you... one time i swapped a motor in a Firebird and used the fuel vent as a return.. well, there were no clamps on the line to the tank and it leaked like crazy in different places when i first started it up... oops.. lol.

def do it...
lots of different types of motors/tranny have been swapped into e30's...
So i contacted some people and found out that it should not cost TOO muchhh... We have decided on the TT motor tho.
So far car has been stripped, and is in the process of making mounts.

What trans are you going to use? Mazda trans or Bimmer trans? If you can make the custom motor mounts then a trans crossmember shouldn't be too hard either.
If the mazda shifter will line up in a position that'll work then all you really need after that would be a custom driveshaft which shouldn't be that hard. The spicer catalog is online with measurements and dimensions so you can look at u-joints and have an idea of what you need to use.
What are you gonna do about cooling and accessories? Is there room in the front of the motor for all that stuff or will you have to set back the motor?
Sounds like a neat project. Post some pictures if you get a chance.
