Anyone here seen them yet? Are they out where people can see them, or are they tucked away in a hangar? I wouldn't mind driving over to Hickam during lunch or after work. I know I probably couldn't get very close to them, but I'd like to see one in person -- even if it's from a distance.

I used to watch them with F15's and F16's go at in in vertical climb race.

Those Raptor are F*cken bad ass! Test flights that I witnessed I'd watch those Raptors just barely take off while an F16 would trace the runway about 100ft above deck pacing the Raptor's take off. Then they go into a vertical climb. Raptor FTW!

I used to have to deal with Harriers all the time on USS Thirdship. Pretty cool plane, except for the time one almost flew straight into the ocean.

Speaking of cool, those things are water cooled during vertical take off and landing.

F22s are f'ing badazz. Simply blows my mind how much better they are than our most current planes. :wtf:

I remember hearing scuttlebutt from the dudes at Edwards Air Force base (when I was stationed there) that these Raptors are looking to replace almost all the other fighter jets in use in our military right now.

In other words they're talking about even Navy and Marine Corps using them. If that's the case they'll we'll start to hear more about Air Force detachments aboard USS carriers.

But from the looks of it, they don't have any of those cable hooks to land on the Carrier deck. Oh well I guess that's why it's called scuttlebutt.

But oh you should have seen the fight for which aircraft will receive more testing and be favored to be phased in. The F22 won but there is an F23 that has an orbital thrust engine. Think of an up to date AV-8 (Harrier).

I seriously doubt the Marine Corps and the Navy would field the F-22. They've got variations of the JTF that have been cooking for a while now.

Spike, I'd say the Su-37 is the least of our worries right now. I'd be more concerned with Chinese fighters and bombers!

Navy is suppose to be getting them, these are supposingly replacing the F18's (of course the Marine Corps will just follow suit). Just like now how the Osprey is commisioned the CH-46's are seeing its last battle. It's a matter of time, F-18's will be around for awhile but the F-22's will phase them out eventually.

F22's are bad ass! It's my ultimate dream to become a F22 fighter pilot. Too bad my eye vision sucks! lol. I did though was approached by a Marine recruiter who told me I could have a PRK surgery that can correct my vision without it being noticed that I had corrective surgery. Sounds kind of sketchy though but it really interested me more on being a pilot.

Back to topic though, F22's are killer. I believe lockheed martin developed and produces the F22s? I remember serving a lockheed martin employee once and he claimed to be part of the team that researched and developed this new jet fighter. I even watched a lot of documentaries about this jet. It's really mind blowing to know what this airplane can do. Stealth, speed, and basically air superiority is what can you can describe this new generation of fighter jets.

I heard the F22 can do mach flight w/o afterburners.

Is this true?

But hey...were u watching the Discovery Channel? I was looking at those next-generation Predator planes...wow! They look scary...basically unmanned Stealth bombers...w/o need to worry about G-forces on pilots they can do insane manuvers and speeds.

Skynet is coming....skynet is coming....

Supercruise. I believe it's something like Mach 1.5 at mil(itary) power.

As for the Navy... I've been out of the aerospace / defense loop for a while now but they were going to use two variants of the JSF. The F-22 is designed for those nice 13,000 foot USAF runways. ;)

Aren't these the ones that are being developed for the Navy/Marines?

Yuppers. That'd be the one. Several different variants for the USAF / USN / USMC.

Yeah I don't think the Navy/Marines can afford the F-22s. They can barely afford the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters -- they cut the original numbers they were suppose to purchase by more than half. F-22's will never be able to land on the boat, 1.) it's too damn heavy, 2.) structurally it's not built to take the shocks from catapults and arrested landings. Hell the F-35C (the Navy's variant of the JSF) hasn't even pass the testing phase yet because the darn thing is too heavy to even consider to land on the boat. Originally it was planned to go operational sometime by next year, but that's not going to happen.

What a combination that would be huh? F-22 Raptors piloted by some of the best combat aviators in the world -- Naval Aviators. It's been done before with one of the Air Force's best fighters:

F-16N at the Naval Fighter Weapons School, better known as TOPGUN. These F-16N are used as aggressors and are flown by the best combat aviators in the Navy.
