View Full Version : Buick GN's? WTF is up with the prices!
 :Bolt:
Is about all I can say... I have NEVER seen vehicel preices escalate like the GN's have in the last 3 years......
Both KBB and NADA both show values eqaul to or above the original purchase prices for them!

^^ that is a sweet lookin ride... how much are they going for nowdays? :read:
^^^^ DAve, That one is pretty modded... but very subtle. it looks to be an 84-86 from the grille...

Working where you do I'm sure you get to see some nice examples...
I remember when they were selling GNXs, Buick engineers gave out license plate holders that said,"I break for Corvettes." GNs/Turbo TRs are bad!!!!

I should put one on my old grampas car... :hilarious:

I'd pay top dollar for a gnx.
Besides, you know how much the late 70's firebirds are going for now? One of the last available cars w/ a factory big block.it's going to be the next big muscle car for collectors.

I'm not sure, but from the headlights it looks like a red X to me.

86-87 GN's are right around 20 years old and have surpassed their NEW selling price already...
Check KBB for an 87 GN with over 100K... $20K-$23K.... just insane...
Mine is still stock... (yeah, right):freakout:
GNX's?...
Better have some real coin there...
#057 sold on ebay recently for $72K (I think)... some have sold in excess of $100K... High mile DD quality cars will still run you $40K+...
A Rebuilt salvage car sold for $25K (Turns out they transferred all the good stuff including the VIN which is illegal) on ebay as well... pics can be found on the companies website.

haha rob, i was looking at KBB a couple of months ago for this very car! Im trying to work this guy down on his GN for the past 3 months, so far all I got was 9gs. The car is in fair shape, yet KBB states the car at 23k. ISnt that crazy? I mean, its a 20 year old Buick regal. sheesh.
Ill keep trying tho. ;)

How about a used T-type? Aren't they pretty much the same thing w/o the black paint and cosmetics? One of my friend's back in high school had a pretty quick T-type. Used to surprise people at the track all the time b/c he took all the emblems off and made it look like a family car.

Its in fair condition. Driver seat cover ripped, rust bubble on lower front corner of both doors and on rear truck lid...like all regals of that year. I wouldnt pay 9k for it, though. Im still waiting and the car is still sitting. :)

What kbb doesnt tell you is they take average selling prices of all GN's to come up with values... and GNX's all start life as GNs....
miles, condition? EDIT... NM... I saw this...

no way in hell is that car worth 9K... 5 or 6 at the very most...
And NO, not all Regals of that generation have tons of rot.

yup... T's use the exact same drivetrain, some even had the W02 blackout trim package.
There were also WE4s in 87... basically a GN (Black T) with blackout trim and grey cloth (not 2-tone like GN) seats...
People in the know can spot them.. even if you take off the turbo hood I can walk around one and tell you what it is

did the 87 T-types use the GN intercooler setup too? they would probably have the same HP/TQ ratings as a GN?
that would probably be good deal (i'm assuming that T-types have a lower KBB value or resale value than a GN) if you weren't too concerned about having a GN.

EXACT same drivetrain... :deadhorse:
only real option as far as drivetrain would be G80 (positraction)

I believe that there is one for sale on the base at Pearl Harbor for cheap. I dont know much at all about. I will go buy snag a few pix and get numbers. Id like to get it but I am leaving here in OCt or Nov and already have a few cars to ship no need for more.

I remember looking for one of those when I lived in Texas back in 1997. The Warden and I were looking high and low for one of those but couldn't anyone willing to part with theirs. I think if he were given the option of having the GNX or me I'd be long gone with the door hitting me on the ass on the way out. We have a family friend who's got one in such cherry condition. He refuses to let his wife drive it, even on their wedding day she couldn't get behind the wheel.

That belongs to Dennis... cosmetically a GNX clone with the exception of the Ttops...

TTAs are climbing in value... now... a turbo 'bird?... nah...
I'm glad that American muscle is getting expensive. These days, the big thing in everyday car culture is imports, ricers and drifting. You'd think no one was into muscle cars anymore, but it's nice to see that interest in them is actually increasing, especially among people with clout.
Speaking of GNs, does anyone remember the ones Buick built for the FBI? If I'm remember what I've read in the 80s correctly, Buick built them with better suspension, no speed limiter in the ECU and maybe a few other tweaks. What ever happened to these GNs? They must be worth a lot now, but how do collectors document the fact that it's a FBI car?

I purchased an new 87 T-Type at Schuman because I didn't want to order and wait for the GN's to come in. My car was dark blue w/ blackout trim... Damn car was stupid fast. Miss it!

I remember reading about them in a magazine article a long time ago (i think it was back in the late 80's, maybe around 86 or 87). They were supposed to be wicked fast and handle pretty well.
I would guess that they would suffer the same fate as other used gov't vehicles or other special order or COPO vehicles (whatever that may be). I would hazard a guess that back then nobody ever suspected that they would be worth anything, so they may have been auctioned off, decommissioned to some bone yard or just destroyed?

hey, lucky you at least had one for a time - i spoke to a couple of friends that had them that are so sad they sold them. if they'd have known back then what the cars are going for now, they never would have sold them.

Did he ever auto-x (like a long time ago, maybe early 1990's?) the car? there used to be a GN or two that used to come out when it was still at Barbar's Point (not the most recent airfield, but the old abandoned site by the rear gate just past the sewage treatment plant). I remember one of them had the GNX fenders and what appeared to be some sort of upgraded turbo and heat shield. I'm pretty sure it didn't have t-tops, but that was a long time ago.

Wait, you support "Stupid Money" or "Ballerz that have no knowledge of cars?"

FBI cars.... no one has ever actually seen one IIRC. They also allegedly had a large fuel cell in the trunk as part of the "equipment package"... dont know if they ever really existed...
There was a series of Methanol compatible TRs for Gov't evaluation... ... stainess fuel tank in stock location and some other stuff specific to those cars...
The guy that owned one of the auto-x cars was David Heard (the one with the GNX lookalike wheels) who is a good friend. He sadly sold the car to help his GF start up some kind of small business. He wanted to sell it to me but I had just gotten married and had "invested" all my $$$ into the wedding... The car changed hands several times before being totalled in Manoa.. car v. retaining wall, car always loses...
The one on PH FS is a mainland transplant car... kind of young military guy owns it... he wants $7500... and cant sell it because of the T-tops...

^^^^ GNX 547 (last GNX built)
did some quickie research... the "FBI" cars are a fallacy...
Myth: Did the government, FBI, CIA purchase and use GNX's?
NO, however, according to a book published by Dennis Kirban (p. 273),
the government bought approximately 80 Regal T-types in 1986-87.

Yep, FBI bought Mustang SSP's.
Yep, FBI bought Mustang SSP's.
They werent the only ones... LE across the country did...
I did discover that about 80 T-types were purchased during 86-87 for gov't use... what kind of use, no one REALLY seems to know...
The methanol cars are kind of unique
i've seen two GNs recently on thw Windward side...one was in alright shape, the other was CHERRY.
