my first try at panoramic shot. me think i went a bit tooo much. this is 21 shots stitched together and the original file came out to a monster picture 10feet long haha. 165 mb file for one picture is HUGE (over 450mb when i was working on it)!!!
i couldnt get all the colors the same guess cuz the clouds came and went when i shot it.
edit: oo , when i posted it up , it was shrunk down. wonder how big a picture i can put up? i can go huge u know *wink*

the difference between em is mainly the way u change shutter speed and apertures. Im used to the Nikon ways but I shot Canons before and the wheel is easy to learn.

05-20-2007, 01:35 PM
yeah i know about the yellow stuff ...i would need filters for that right? if u got a better camera...
howzitboy
05-20-2007, 04:15 PM
u can correct it pretty nicely with photoshop.
its the white balance on your camera (on better cameras). u set the balance to that lighting and the picture comes out nice and normal.
to get rid of it another way, use flash to even out the light. flash is white light ie same as sunlight so it will remove that yellow cast.

:shine: I love all of these pictures! They are so beautiful...one of the biggest and best reasons why I love living in Hawaii--great photo backgrounds no matter where you go (for the most part)! LOVE THEM--KEEP THEM COMING! Maybe I'll figure out how to use my little digicam so that I can take some neat pictures, too.
One question--how do you all "choose" your pictures? Is it random, just "take a pic and see how it turns out?" or do you actual "look" for the right look and take the pic? Hubby is the photographer in this family, but he is in the military, so he isn't always around to take pictures. I try my best, but they never come out as good as his.

thank you, you are too kind. I like your photos a lot, way more creative than me. do you know whatever happened to joaquin siopak? had some really great island / beach captures for the newspapers then all of sudden no more. :(
The beach shot is great--definitely feel like I am there! :)
The next one is pretty cool...kind of like something you would see in a movie where the person is just being swallowed by the water...love the color of the ocean in it! I love that aqua color--it's the best!
The sailboat pic is really COOL! I love how the rays of light just come down on either side of it! It's like it has its own natural border around it. I wonder if you crop the foreground some if it would look really good with just the rays of light and a little water in the front?
The keiki just make me smile...that is what I like to see most--happy children just being kids...<sigh> :)
I don't know when I'll be able to post any pics I took/take...not very computer savy, so it takes me forever sometimes to figure out how programs, etc. work. Hubby is the computer geek in this family (as well as the photographer, car guy, etc), so generally don't do much with the 'puter when things need to be done. I know, I know...bad wifey--I know I should learn to be more computer savy, but with four keiki 10 and under, it's hard to find the time sometimes. I'm generally good about figuring things out painfully slow by just "trial and error". Perhaps one of these I'll get the hang of doing crops, borders, etc. with the photoshop program and then be able to post some nice pics like you all do. Otherwise, all I can do is post up pics that come straight off the camera to the computer. On the other hand, I do have a fairly good eye for things (if I do say so myself! LOL!), so I can tell you in pretty good detail what my critiques are of pictures if you want a lot of detaile oriented comments and "stuff". But that's probably not what you are looking for, so I'll keep my critiques low-key.
howzitboy--do you know what kind of bird that is in your picture? I see them all the time and my kids are always fascinated by wildlife and ask if I know what kind of bird it is. I have no idea, so I thought I'd ask. Also, do you know what kind of flower that yellow one is? I see them in red all over the place, but don't the name of them.

re:he_thinks_its_his_car, that bird is a red vented bulbul, its one of the pest birds that somehow snuck its way to Hawaii and now is everywhere. There are 2 types of bulbuls, the other is the The Red-whiskered bulbul.
quicky tutorial to resize:
open picture in photoshop, just go to "image" then scroll down to "image size". click that one and look at the top 2 numbers. whichever one is the biggest, change that to like 700 pixels. The second number will automatically change if the " constrain proportions" box is checked.
once its resized, save it as a NEW NAME! if u give it the same name, your original will be permanently shrunk!! Save it as a JPG and u done!!

dust on your sensor comes out as a blackish dot on your pictures so its probably just a flare or reflection on the lens. I dont see a hotspot except at the top left and that looks kewl! only way i see a problem is the bottom of the picture is too dark. Dodge the ashtrash's edges to bring them out some. As it is right now, its unbalanced imho.

trying another one from the day at maks. let it rip, I will give my own thoughts after too, we are our own harshest critics.
http://www.hawaiitalks.net/photopost/data/502/Makapuu_10_.jpg
It must have been a hazy day, the background almost looks like it's painted/colored in with color pencils. I don't know if it's my computer screen or what, but it seems like the picture is too bright. Does that make any sense? Like over exposure maybe? Perhaps it's the shading under the rocks that make it look that way. I just feel like I'm looking at a really bright view so my eyes are trying to adjust to the brightness. Hope that made sense...
taegu808
06-01-2007, 02:13 AM
yah it was super bright Hawaiian day and tough to meter - if I exposed for the sky then all detail in the rock would be lost in darkness and a blackened silhouette was not the desired effect; if I exposed for the rock which I did then the sky gets blown out. if I used the on camera flash to fill then I'd lose the shadow modeling since it's blasting straight ahead. I did try to tweak the sky darker after though. luckily it was afternoon so there were side shadows to help model the lava. and that is what struck me first :)
for me I can clearly see the figure of a girl leaning back and staring out to that pastel vista beyond, her face to the sun. she is the very subtle subject of the picture :p I know I'm nuts but that's my vision and it will not resonate with everyone. I'm sorry I could not bring life to rock for you :( I am kinda' happy about the colored in sky comment though :) I like the sky like that and that was the second thing that drew me to the scene along with the dreamy mokus in back. I will turn down some of the extra in cam processing though, it's overboosted.
maybe a gradient filter would help. I'm not big on using filters though. other suggestions for shooting bright sky vs. dark subject elements? w/o hauling around reflectors or other gear?
there's another pic with a face in the rocks that looks like he's presiding over the heiau. at least that's what I see. well, more help and comments appreciated. those of you who haven't already put me on ignore (lol).
aside: while we're on the subject of sky talk, one of the funniest things I overheard while out in the water was these two tourists tripping out on the sky and this one cloud in particular. they were laughing and cracking up saying the same thing, it looks drawn in or fake like they were actually in a scene of the Simpsons :p and now sometimes I look up at the sky and yeah it does look just like a cartoon! that one silly cloud! ok I guess you have to be there.
holy flipping bleeps was googling simpsons clouds and came upon this shot!
http://www.weatheranswer.com/public/Best_cloud.jpg
As soon as you made the comment about the faces, I went back and looked and sure enough! I see them! In fact, I "saw" the man's face looking at the heiau, but I didn't catch the girl until I went back after you mentioned it. Definitely can see her there--she looks like she has her hair pulled back in a ponytail and her knees tucked up--like she's hugging them.
That pic of the mountain is just W-O-W! First thought was flying saucer over a mountain...second thought was one of those portabello mushroom caps over it...third thought was a giant sand dollar floating over it!
taegu808
06-01-2007, 01:23 PM
:cry3: (of joy!) yes, she has a ponytail!!!!!! and disappears like an escher picture when you walk closer or away because it's all "just rocks". I want to go back to Puu O Mahuka too. last time focused on the beach views but want to try the heiau again. don't know how many poor souls were sacrificed at the altar there but that is the one Hawaiians of the day did not shed a tear to see shut down. that heiau you cannot enter only walk around the perimeter.

Did you try uploading it to our Gallery? Just click on the gallery, and hit upload photos:

If you can't find it do this: Right-click on the file, copy, then pasting it to your desktop. Then when you upload, just click on the desktop...it's much easier to find that way.
You could also change the extension to .txt, and then upload it as an attachment? I can fix it from there...

Nope, no snow! But it was friggan cold!!! And stupid me, I didn't bring warm enough clothes to stand out in the wind and take pics while the sun was setting...
Thanks about the pic...I can't believe it turned out like that since I was trying to crop out the people who were standing in front of me and trying to keep my two youngest ones from getting lost in the crowd.
I wish had gotten some good shots of the peacocks that were running around all over. Apparently two were fighting over a female because they were just chasing each other around and really making a lot of noise. One was so loud and ran right in front of my youngest (2 1/2 yrs. old) and scared her to death! For a little while after that she just stuck by me and kept saying "I don't like birds anymore." Poor thing, she'll one of those who will be scream at the sight of peacock feathers or something.
I'd like to get to the observation tower of Mauna Kea one of these days...I imagine it would be something like Mt. Fuji. I've been to the top of that and it is freakin' COLD! Even at the end of July/beginning of August there is snow up there and the weather is not very cooperative, you know?

06-11-2007, 10:57 AM
I feel your pain :( Try to keep things simple? Use windows explorer to go through all the subdirectories. The camera software will follow some kind of common scheme when it copies to your pc, like using the photo date to file them into sub-directories. if that file was resized and then saved, then the original may be gone forever as it was overwritten. a big p.i.t.a. yes. but you should be able to find it somewhere.
storage is getting cheap now too. wait for a sale and buy an external xx GB hard disk and then transfer all photo files just to that drive then pics will never be able to run away and hide :p
glad you like the aerial shots. can't open the window so have to shoot through the glass and no time to fuss around with filters. still having much fun though. here's one of Pier 39 and the City!

Your pictures seem very centered. Not always a bad thing, but using the rule of thirds can sometimes make an image more interesting.

what else should i do to the pic to make it "complete"? crop out some of the turf in the front or does that make a sort of stage? is that the right amount of blur in the background and foreground?
should i have focused on mario first and then moved the cam to the left so that more of the left spider would be in view behind the pez frog?
b
ps. i think i gots to read the camera instruction manual as it was hard to focus with the 9 points trying to focus on everything.
pps. is this the biggest the photo can get uploaded on HT? the photo before uploading was screen sized.

Depends what you were trying to capture.
ps. i think i gots to read the camera instruction manual as it was hard to focus with the 9 points trying to focus on everything.
RTFM is usually good. As a personal preference, I switched mine to use the center AF point using the AF Point Selection button (from the back is the top most right button) and using the main dial (front index finger dial near shutter button) to switch AF points.
Something I learned this past weekend while shooting at the OIA championship game is that on the 40D, there's this other button on the back called <AF-ON> AF Button. I thought it used during Live View but found out you can use this to focus on your subject and use the shutter button to get the exposure and capture the image. On previous models (10D, 20D), you would have had to configure the AE / AF lock button to perform that function. Using this function is actually easier when shooting action stuff. Takes a while to get used to it though. I don't use it during other types of photography. Well, I haven't yet.
pps. is this the biggest the photo can get uploaded on HT? the photo before uploading was screen sized.
I don't know. I usually re-size my images to 600x400 (or close to it) before uploading anywhere to save space on the server and time uploading. Besides, I'd rather have control on the re-size instead of the server doing it which can cause a few images to become blurry.

ZFF I hate your photos only because I'm fricken jealous of the hot cars!
1st one looks like ur missing the highs and lows (got a good mid going) try taking a more extreme exposure of the highs and lows and try again. Or you could try upping the tone for those two layers.
2nd...It looks like your missing the highlights in ur tonemap. Try upping the highlight layer or take a more over exposed image next time...
idiosyncratic

i like this pic. with it's subdued tones, it reminds me slightly of those black & white pics of yesteryear; giving it a nostalgic kind of feeling to it... somehow. It's like a classic portrait of a photographer... All's that's missing is that big bulb instead of that newer flash unit. :gapteeth:
I'm a noobie at this, so I'm probably going to ask questions that sound really dumb.
1st one looks like ur missing the highs and lows (got a good mid going) try taking a more extreme exposure of the highs and lows and try again. Or you could try upping the tone for those two layers.I'm not even sure I understand what you're saying. You mean my overexposed picture need to be more overexposed and my underexposed picture needs to be more underexposed? How can you tell that just by looking at my picture?
I use the Automatic Exposure Bracketing feature of my Rebel XT, and it can only go up and down 2 stops (not sure if I'm using the right words). I like using the auto-bracketing, because I don't want to deal with a tripod. I just set it to "continous mode" (again, I don't know what the right terms are), and all I have to do is point and hold down the button. It'll snap off the three shots in rapid succession. It's SOOO much easier to deal with.
2nd...It looks like your missing the highlights in ur tonemap. Try upping the highlight layer or take a more over exposed image next time...Again, no idea what you're talking about. I just tweak the settings in photomatix until I get the look I want. If there's a good formula for the tone mapping, I'd love to know what it is. It seems to take me forever to get it where I'm happy with it. I don't even know what I should be looking for. Got any good links where I can learn more about this stuff?
