View Full Version : Air Bag Light

I removed my steering wheel air bag some time ago and was wondering if anyone knew of a trick to make the air bag dash light stay off? I know I could pull the bulb and I'm already using the black electrical tape cover method. Just wondering if there was a more "legitimate" way to make the system see what it needs to see to make the light go off.

I took a resistance reading on the air bag module hoping I could jump the connection with a resistor but there is no resistance.

Any other ideas?

What type of vehicle is it, that would help narrow down your options...I'm doing some reading on it right now.

On my 91 240, the SRS light came on while driving indicating a fault in the system. I bought the factory SRS service manual which said that the trouble code showed a bad airbag or wiring from the crash sensor to the airbag. I then bought the test resistor which substitutes for the air bag to see if the SRS light would go out. Because the air bag and all the associated wiring checked good, the manual said the crash sensor is bad but only by elimination. After learning that a new sensor listed for $960, I studied the wiring diagram for the SRS system and discovered that the power for the SRS light comes from the dashboard not the SRS system which turns the light out when no fault codes are stored. So if there were no power to the system the light would stay on. I cleaned the contacts of the yellow or orange connector, where there was power, which is under the carpet of the transmission tunnel driver's side. I then cleared the trouble codes 9See below) and everything checked out fine. That was over a year ago and the light reacts normally. The manual did not mention this as a possible cause. I hope this explanation will help you and others with "bad" sensors.

Maybe that will help you narrow down that it's not the SRS system that powers the light? By removing the power to the lamp itself, wouldn't that kill it?

2003 Chevy S-10

I wonder if OBD II stores the air bag codes? I have a scanner but haven't tried checking that yet.

I found this little snippet about resistance on a 95 S-10? Maybe it's similar? So that means that if you've got a manual for the S-10, there might be something in there that says what it needs to keep the light off, and then that would be your solution. I've never messed with an S-10 before. Sorry I can't help you more.

I have a '98 S10 in which I replaced the driver side bucket seat. The
replacement seat from a Blazer did not have the connector that goes into the
airbag switch, so my air bag light is on.
The S10 (Helms) shop manual say the voltage should be less than 10 v for the
light to go off.
Question:
Radio Shack has either a 2 ohm and 3.9 ohm 1/2-watt carbon resistors -
nothing closer to 3 ohms.

Thanks for the help. My Haynes manual is very vague concerning the air bag stuff, but I will look over the schematics and take some voltage / amp readings on that connector and see which resistor I should use if 10 volts is the magic number.

Werd, good luck with that. :)

Well, no luck finding voltage or resistance to that connector. It's got me stumped. Haynes says a lot of nothing, but did mention about a diagnostic module that stores codes and sends the signal for the light. I couldn't find that module though. Haynes says it's somewhere under the passenger kick panel, but I couldn't find anything resembling a module.

I did some internet research and did find this little generic blurb: Most air bag modules offer a circuit resistance of approximately 1 to 3 ohms to the electrical circuit. Guess I'll make a trip to Radio Shack tomorrow and see what I can find, because a regular jumper wire does nothing.

Taking my dash apart for the umpteenth time is my favorite thing to do!!!!!

I've become very intimate with my floorboard.

I can't stand electronics...too much wiring..heh. I'd honestly just do it the lazy way, and just take the freakin' bulb out or something. :gapteeth:

If all else fails, that's what I'm doing next!

VICTORY!!!!! I went to Radio Shack and got a package of the 1 ohm 10 watt resistors. I soldered two of them in series to get 2 ohms resistance and then soldered that to my dummy connector.

Started up the truck and the light did its blinky thing like it's supposed to and then....the light goes out!!!!! Success!!!!! :bannana_guitar:
