why do a lot of pitchers use pinch hitters? is it to protect their arms or do they suck at batting?

i'd usually ask Mr. Titan (he knows a lot about BB) but he ain't here now. and i'm bored.:wavey:

yah...they usually really suck at batting! most haven't hit since high school...but in the American League they have the designated hitter so that the pitcher doesn't hit...no such rule for the National League!

usually pinch hitters are inserted in the latter innings when the starting pitcher is about to be replaced by a reliever. historically, pitchers are usually not good batters because of how much focus and practice is put into pitching and conditioning the muscles for it that they tend to neglect batting, thus not developing specific muscles for hitting.
so for strategic purposes, the coach will have a pinch hitter hit for the pitcher to maximize potential base hit when it's time for him to bat (instead of having the pitcher do one last at bat) and is then replaced by a reliever

Dontrell of the marlins is probably one of the few pitchers i would let swing away.

i forgot this was a sports thread. I thought lois wanted someone to pinch hit at home.

Anyway, Now that i'm back to my computer lois,
Usually pinch hitters for pitchers are used when the pitcher is just about done for the game, and is up to bat again, they will usually pinch hit for him, since they are going to replace him anyway.
also, pinch hitters are used late in the game to bring a more experienced bat up to the plate.
