It's that time of year again...when motorsports enthusiasts and spectators come together for the annual Build The Track! Motorsports Show. This is our 4th year, and again, we're here to promote the efforts to build a motorsports facility here on the island of Oahu. Our show has become a proven and reliable event, and has grown each year, featuring hundreds of vehicles while attracting thousands of spectators. It's become a go-to event, and has developed a dedicated following. To our past sponsors and supporters, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous help.
This year's show will be held on Saturday, June 19th, 2010 at the Aloha Tower Marketplace during Father's Day Weekend.
The entire event is non-profit, free to the public, and free to enter. We rely on contributions from our sponsors to run this event, and we're looking for help for this year's show. If you are interested in sponsoring, or know a company or someone who might be, please view the link to our sponsorship packet for more information on our packages and how we can serve you best.
Click Here for our Sponsorship Packet!
Please remember that although we are focusing on our Presenting, Title, and Show Sponsors, we are also willing to work out custom sponsorships packages to fit your needs. Please contact the event coordinator for further discussion.
Here's to another great show this year! And may we make ground on building something for all of our enthusiasts...

Motorsports, even during these times of economic crisis, is still one of the top-ranking spectator sports in the world. Depending on what studies you read, or who you ask, some consider it to be number one, and the numbers don't lie, be it economically or socially. From Formula One to The World Of Outlaws, fans all across the globe eagerly bare their ears and eyes to the roars, screeches, and crunches of their chosen motorsport and gladly take the aural and visual punishment again and again for this global phenomenon. Man against man, machine against machine, for a large majority, motorsports is the adrenaline rush fans can't get enough of. And our island homes are no stranger to these addictively satisfying spectacles.
Hawaii has a long and vibrant history of motorsports enthusiasm that continues to this day, whether it was drag racing at Hawaii Raceway Park, stock car racing at Hilo Motor Speedway, or even more recently, the amazing karting at Puunene Go Kart Track on Maui. That is to say, that it continues for most in our great state of Aloha. Most readers of Hawaii Motorbeat are probably aware of the loss in April 2006 of Hawaii's oldest and largest motorsports facility, the aforementioned Hawaii Raceway Park .
I am a relative newcomer to Hawaii's motorsports scene, but since retiring in 2004, I have become utterly entwined and dedicated to the construction of a new home for Oahu's motorsports enthusiasts much in the same way that Paul Maddox has committed himself to realizing the dream of Kona Motorsports Park. Since settling in, I have poured over every document, news story, media clip, and loving story told from wistful elders in the hopes that I can gather a recollection of the passionate history our island home has had. And the small glimpse I've been able to acquire reinforces the need I have, as others, to somehow get racing back on track, and as fast as possible. We are missing something that's sorely needed here, not just for ourselves, but our children and their children.
Motorsports has many positives that most of the general public don't immediately pick up on. Some correlate motorsports with street racing and illegal actions on our highways, when in reality, true motorsports is the exact opposite of the sensationalism you often see on the late night news. Organized motorsports provides guidance and education for our youth while teaching them respect for the rules of the road as well as opening them up to new challenges in a safe and controlled environment. Motorsports creates and maintains employment, helps to generate a stable local economy, and offers exciting alternatives in recreation and entertainment for the surrounding community. In many ways, a day at a motorsports facility is more about spending time with your family and friends than actually strapping in and racing. Those that do race in organized events, rarely if ever take to the street. They know better, and if they don't, their peers will gladly remind them as is much the case from my experiences.
For Oahu, we no longer have these opportunities afforded to us. True, the SCCA proudly continues its incredible contests of skill and agility at the Aloha Stadium, but this is a small taste of what was once a thriving motorsports community. Since 2006, motorsports on Oahu is less about pushing vehicles to the limit, and more about pushing them back into the garage after wiping the cobwebs off.
So what hope do we have to getting back on track? Is there any chance in the near future? Well, yes, I'd like to think so. There is a ray of hope, a light in the tunnel, and a flagger on the podium. The current and most realistic chance Oahu has is the newly minted Kalaeloa Raceway Park (KRP) which is located on the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point. This small parcel of land is currently in the permitting and planning stages and the intent is to have the facility up and operating as soon as it is feasibly possible. It's a temporary measure until we find a more permanent solution, but it's all we've got at the moment.
The entire project is being funded by George and Jeanette Grace, Jr., owners of Paradise Lua, a local portable sanitation service, and owners of Save Oahu's Racetracks, LLC. Once advocates of the efforts to condemn Hawaii Raceway Park for the purposes of reopening it as a city/state-run motorsports facility, they've teamed up with the Oahu Motorsports Advisory Council otherwise known as OMAC. OMAC is a loose-group of professionals, including former tenants of HRP as well as new blood dedicated to building temporary and permanent motorsports facilities on Oahu. Over a year ago, these two groups stood before the State of Hawaii as well as the Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL), and vowed to work together to develop KRP into a multi-use motorsports facility.
It has been a long and hard road. There have been delays. There have been cultural, historical, and environmental concerns to address. There have been moments of success and breakthroughs. There have been heated testimonies before the neighborhood boards, and the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA), and there has even been rampant speculation and rumor spread in attempts to halt the progress of the project. I have seen an entire hall of community members stand in support of our efforts.
But in my eyes, as well as many others, none of this matters. The only thing that matters is focusing on the finish line, right before us on the horizon, close and tantalizing, nearly within reach. Kalaeloa Raceway Park continues to work through the process, step-by-step, day-by-day, and we'll continue to push forward until we open the gates with a sigh of relief and cheers of happiness. And then we'll go back to work.
Until we find a permanent solution, KRP is the only current solution that has a chance of giving some relief to our community. We need your support and help to make it happen.
If you'd like more information about the status of Kalaeloa Raceway Park, please visit www.kalaeloaracewaypark.com and stay tuned to www.buildthetrack.com for more information on how you can help. If you would like to help or donate, in any form or fashion, to the development and construction of KRP, please contact me at

Hello everyone,
I'm sure that many of you saw the front page of the Honolulu Advertiser regarding the "Chances of Honolulu Racetrack dwindle". For the record, I have contacted DHHL, and they have indicated to me, that they need to know that the MOTORSPORTS COMMUNITY supports this effort. It's not specific to a few people...it's our entire family of racers, drifters, draggers, dirt racers, etc. that will make or break this facility.
For those of you that have attended the meetings we have held and continue to hold, you may remember that we discussed this very issue. And you may remember what we need to make this happen.
We need letters of support. Tons of them. Enough to swamp the politicians in a sea of paper. I would like to have a nice, thick stack of support letters thrown on a few people's desks by the time the Build The Track! Motorsports Show rolls around. If you want a racetrack, if you want to drift, drag, road race, go-kart, dirt track, whatever again, legally...then you'll take 5 minutes out of your day, and write a letter of support. Take pen to paper and support the developer and our efforts to make this happen. Not an email, as those get discarded and overlooked very quickly.
Please write a letter of support in your own words using the attached letter templates and mail it to:
Michael J. Kitchens (OMAC) 2033 Beckley Street Honolulu, HI 96819
You may also fax it directly to:
Fax: (808) 259-8421
Here is the request and sample letters: OMAC Support Request Letter Sample Letter
Make sure your letters are addressed to no-one, as they will be grouped, copied, and sent to the appropriate responsible agencies needed to make the facility happen. Also ensure that your full contact information is included within the letter. I will post some templates here for you to follow.
Unity = The majority of the motorsports community standing behind this project. Not specific people.
Be a part of the solution, not the problem. Please pass this bulletin to all of your friends and coworkers.
Mahalo!

I would like to personally thank every single person that helped to make this year's BTT show a huge success! The amount of spectators and entrants easily surpassed last year's show by leaps and bounds. We sincerely hope everyone that attended had a great time and appreciate their support. I would also like to thank all of my sponsors for the event including our main title sponsor Road Runner, as well as Firestone Complete Auto Care and HawaiiTalks.Net. We simply could not have held the event without their help, and I encourage everyone to please support them with your valued business.
I would also like to thank our entertainment for the day for their help in making the show fun for everyone: The Gregg Hammer Band, The Dreamers, Generation NXT & The Diverse Arts Center, Jeff Chlupsa and his NASCAR oval, Oahu Championship Series, RCD1 and most espescially, PC Gamerz for putting on a great racing tournament!
Thanks to Garage JS4KIX for creating such beautiful trophies and Mike Quering for all of his hard work. Thanks to Kevin Sergent of Aiea Copy Center for his help with all of the print advertising. Thanks to Lee Lewis for his generous contribution to the Build The Track! fund.
