Default Korean Comedy Show Torments a Bear Cub

Brian in Jeollanam-do: Comedy show "Animal Farm" torments bear cub for amusement.

Some of the comments are really sickening. With their own horror tales to pass on.

Koreans aren't from the U.S. Keep in mind that there maybe cultural differences...Other cultures do other things that may not be agreeable to Western thought and belief. I sometimes wonder about the single/narrow-mindness of people who need to promote this type of difference. What is the purpose? Read some of the comments and the hate it seems to advocate.

Seriously think about every culture and/or ethnicity you have encounter on this melting pot of a State. Think about the friends, family and others you have met through out the years here or if you have traveled as I have. Think.

i've dealt with a lot of FOB Asians in my line of work and sorry but i have to agree with Asians not being very sympathetic, empathetic, or warm. take my parents for example, they may not have been FOBs but my grandparents were, and there is no way in hell they (my parents) would be as warm as they are without all of us being openly affectionate. i agree that it is a cultural difference and certainly not a inherent racial quality (or flaw, as in this case), but nevertheless it is still cruel...tormenting it for the sake of laughter? i can see if they were feeding the cub to some predator for nature's sake, but that was just for kicks.

cultural or not, that's pretty cruel.

So? We agree there are cultural differences. You deemed it as "cruelty". Koreans deemed it as entertainment. I would cite others practices from other cultures that's disagreeable to me, but that would pointless and hypocritical. I'm asking WHAT is the purpose of such blogs? I am promoting tolerance, some understanding and if not, some acceptance. Read the comments on that blog as Blue said. It's disturbing and promotes an unfair stereotype.

like what other practices are disagreeable? i'm sure there are. so why point out other cultures that have disagreeable practices, but defend this one? makes no sense to me.

i may agree with you that there are cultural differences, but that doesn't mean i like them, or that i disagree with some of the "stereotypes" posted on there. i have to agree with some of that, to be honest as i've experienced somewhat of what some of them have posted.

sorry but i can't tolerate cruelty like that, whether it was Koreans, Americans or Martians doing it.

besides...it's HIS blog and if he wants to complain about Korean shows being cruel to animals, then whatever. if you want to start a blog to complain about the perceived unfairness, then go right ahead. you have every right to rail against his railing against Korean comedy shows.

personally, do you think the treatment of the cub is humane? yes or no? cultural differences aside, as a fellow sentient being. would you do that to the cub?

examples of positive shows highlighting cultural differences: Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations", and Dhani Jones Tackles the Globe.

in Dhani's adventures around the globe learning their culture and sport, he isn't always treated exactly the most hospitably (in OUR terms perhaps) and sometimes you can detect a bit of anger on his part from that, but it ain't like they are beating him. i suspect it could be the competitive nature of the show's premise n and of itself.

What happens when your friend brings their dog over to your house and say you have a little puppy? Usually they run away scared. It's a natural response for animals (and humans as babies cry when they are presented with strange/unsusal situations and they don't know what's going on). I hardly see this as "tormenting" the cub. They introduce him to a variety of different animals and believe it or not, this is a natural response and had he encountered these animals in the wild (which is not that impossible) he's have the same reactions. To call this tormenting is a gross over exaggeration of the situation (and they could have done a lot worse if they wanted to).

that's true, i guess, i just feel bad for it as it is being "thrust" into the situation. probably in the wild, its mother would be around and Chuck Norrising on anything that might threaten it, or even look at it.

what i guess i don't agree with is the angle on the being tolerant of cultural differences--at what point are you going to continue to defend "cultural differences" and promote tolerance? when Islamic women are stoned to death because someone raped THEM? when girls' genitals are lopped off as a rite of passage? i don't tolerate that shit either. :\

Granted I don't agree with those things either but it's all a matter of majority opinion. Just think if Hitler won WW2 and we were in a Nazi run world and it was the norm to imprison and kill Jews we would see any other country as stupid or inferior to us because they don't share our customs/views.

We live in a global society now and we need to understand that just because we think/act/live a certain way, it is not the be-all-end-all of the argument. Other cultures and societies live their lives their way and we need to find a middle ground to accept it.

A great example is whaling. Many people think that it should be stopped (and that ass hat on the discovery channel does his stupid thing against the Japanese whalers) but who is anyone to tell them that their way of life is wrong? Where do they get the authority to tell them that their society is wrong or that what their doing is bad?

i suppose hunting a species to extinction would be considered a bad thing to any person regardless of culture--it WOULD be bad if they did, they wouldn't have any whales to hunt!

Lets take a step back and look at something more extreme. There are African tribes out there that still practice human sacrifice. Is that acceptable to us? No ways. Is it acceptable to them? They are of course, more than okay with it....it's their culture and its how they live.

Does tormenting a bear cub seem that bad now?

you're missing the point...show me a video about that, and i'll "wtf" about that too...no shortage of "wtfs" from me.

of course it's not comparable, but i think that guy has a right to "wtf" about any culture he can't begin to comprehend. Islamic culture wtfs about our so-called loose women not running around in burkas, and they have every right to do so. however, when they start blowing us up because of it, then i'd say there's a slight problem.
