| Molokai to HNL HT Casual User Additional Info | I recall awhile back someone mentioning wanting to do vermiposting (worm farming) for planting material. When we first moved back in September, my parent's neighbor gave my wife a "Can O Worms" worm farm... ![]() It sat unused for a few weeks, until our neighbor (here at our home) had some "starter" worms that they gave us. That was in October. My wife put all kinds of green food waste (veggies), paper, cardboard, all kinds of non-meat related stuff. I told her she'd probably kill all the worms with all that grossness. I thought she really ruined her farm. Last week she "overhauled" a few layers of the farm and look what we found! ![]() Worms. Like HUNDREDS of them on each level. And lots and lots of "vermipost" (aka worm poop) for the soil. I was dumbfounded. Under all that trash and greenwaste those worms got real busy and multiplied! ![]() It was just layer after layer of worms in the eggshells and other compost-y materials. My wife is stoked. The little tap on the bottom of the farm is for "worm juice" to be dispensed into containers and used as superior plant food; she says it's not that fantastic, but heck, it's free by-product, so our veggies and herb plants are doing very well (some brought back from Molokai, most grown from seed). I'm looking to see if there are homemade worm farms we can put together...this is kind of neat! __________________ "Every setback is merely a setup for an amazing comeback."; Willie Jolley |

| Forum BOB-Erator Admin | Wow...that is really disgusting but really freakin' cool. It's kinda funny, because in Texas, all you have to do to find worms is pour a bucket of water in a certain spot, come back the next day, and dig'em out. Worms are everywhere...a huge timewaster is watching a worm try and make it across asphalt before he dries out and fries. Pooh thing. |

The "Can-o-Worms" commercial worm farm is neat; it has "layers" (kind of like a chinese food steamer), and to get the worms out of the layer (usually the top layer) of vermicast, you simply leave the top lid off and expose it to the sun for about an hour. The worms all shag out and head for lower levels, and when you take the top layer off, all you have is nice brown compost, better than the stuff in a bag, I'm sure! At least our veggies are happy. Then you replace the cardboard, drop some food and stuff, and shift that layer to the bottom of the worm farm. Or was it the top... I don't do it, it's my wife's favorite "toy" for her garden. __________________ "Every setback is merely a setup for an amazing comeback."; Willie Jolley

The funny thing is that the common earthworm is NOT a composting worm, but it still is beneficial in that they are tunnelers, and they aerate the soil and keep it from becoming too clay-like and stiff. The ones we have I think are called red wigglers, and those are full-on poop machines, just eat and drop, and MULTIPLY! I heard of all the different varieties of worms; earthworms, red wigglers, european nightcrawlers, Louisiana swamp worms, green glow worms, Ewa Blues.... I thought worms were just worms! __________________ "Every setback is merely a setup for an amazing comeback."; Willie Jolley
