That is new one to me. Hahaha

Didn't think that it was a vital part of a tool set.

That's a good way to start. I started that way, after I started using Snap On from some of the senior guys, you get a feel for it and that's something you want to buy for everyday use. When it comes to small stuff to do at home, anything pretty much will do.

As for the bigger projects, it's not that bad once you do it one time, unless it really is a PITA to do.

That doesn't mean they won't make us do a breathalyzer. Over here they a little on the strict side. One fender bender and it's off to take a pee test.

Yeah as a pro I can see that being a problem.... but I would def recommend trying it at home. Especially with a challenging fabrication issue - it makes you more philosophic when you waste 200 bucks worth of aluminium instead of angry.

I'll be graduating soon so I've been taking advantage of my student discounts. So far this semester, I've ordered:

-53" tool chest
-Roll cart (w/ drawers)
-1/2" drive digital torque wrench
-3/8" drive digital and beam-type torque wrenches
-1/4" drive beam-type torque wrenches
-1/2" drive impact gun
-3/8" drive air ratchet

I still have a lot on my list, but I'm trying to get the Snap-On items out first. For example, Snap On has some of the best ergonomics and ratcheting mechanisms, therefore I'm buying their ratchets, etc while I can. As for the sockets, Snap On, Matco, hell even Craftsman have the same designs so I'm holding off on those types of items for now.

I really want to purchase a gas-analyzer, but it might be superseded by the time I get to use it. When I get back into the field, I'll be doing whatever the journeyman asks of me, so I doubt he'd allow me to do my own diagnostics, and tell him what the problem is

Why would you want the beam type torque wrench??? If you get the Tech Angle torque wrench from Snap On, it can tell you the torque for turning when checking preload on bearings. I love my Tech Angle toque wrenches, except they don't have it in 1/4".

As for the gas analyzer, it has some good uses but how much of the time are you really gonna use it? It's a costly item, but if it sits too long between uses, you are better off getting a scan tool as most driveability problems can be diagnosed faster that way. I think the Modis and Verus have a gas analyzer capabilities, so you may want to look at that insted of buying a stand alone gas analyzer. The Verus maybe better suited for the gas analyzer because you do not have to exit the troubleshooter or data screens to get the oscilloscope to come up.

The ratchets from Snap On are great, I love my 80 tooth ratchets. I'm trying to get the 80 tooth 1/2" flex head with the 24" handle. My tool dealer is taking his time getting me one.

When you get back into the field??? You planning on extending your break??? As for the journeyman letting you do your own diagnostics and telling him what is wrong, that is the proper thing for an apprentice or beginner. He is there to oversee your diagnosis and guide you through the proper steps if you don't know them. He is also there to confirm what you may or may not know about the problem. It's how a lot of people get started, including the journeyman. I myself had to go through that. That's how it worked at Toyota when I was there, and it has helped a lot. Without them, I would not have gotten as far as I have in such a short time. Just make sure you don't belittle the journey if you are correct, or you might be on the shitlist from hell if you do. Hehehe.
