oh yeah, mine were off-roaded heavily.... the first one died because i didn't quite understand the concept of coolant.... and managed to get it up to 90 mph on a gravel road... but by the time i got home i was runnin on 1-cylinder. the 2nd one was far uglier than the first, and we intentionally kicked the crap out of it and my 300 lb. friend did some cannonballs onto the hood. not sure if you've been around snow much, but when they plow parking lots, they usually pile up massive piles of snow somewhere in the lot, which become mostly ice. Well I'd climb up them with the escort, or just ramp them. Or, sometimes I just parked halfway up a snow mountain. It was hilarious leaving the car parked teetering with two wheels like 3 feet off the ground. |

This is the only picture I have of my Skyline until recently when my old buddy in Okinawa sent me some that he had. I'll post them up later after I scan them.
![]() Mod list: *2.8L (propane) engine. These cars only came with a 2.0L inline six, so 800cc's more felt great! Plus the liquid propane burning engines had a different cam profile and compression, so more power! Of course with the Mikuni's I was using gasoline. *triple Mikuni's *"no name" header & exhaust system. It was dual 50mm all the way back. sounded great! *Tokiko "heavies" shocks w/cut springs. *lightweight flywheel (I don't hear of people doing this in Hawaii. Was one of the first mods we did) *Ultra CDI ignition (another mod we used to do right away, but not here. maybe the newer cars have adequate ignitions?) *headlight conversion (from 4 round lights to 2 rectangular ones) *taillight conversion also (from '78 model to '82, same with the headlights, so it looked natural) *Volk Racing wheels. These 16 spoke 3 piece wheels came with wheel covers you bolt from the inside. An idea copied from the old Group C cars. Remember those vent covers for the front wheels only for brake cooling? This worked great for getting away with having wide wheels while driving on base. *Acrylic lacquer do-it-yourself paint job. Can never get that gun metal grey color...keeps coming out brownish. Look at the Luce picture in the early post, same thing there. Last edited by REH; 10-03-2006 at 09:03 AM. |

![]() Man she rolls a lot... all I had running through my head was, "Yo, ho, yo, ho a pirates life for me!" ![]() Tom, I might be putting a cylinder head with twin 40mm Mikuni PHHH (I think that's their designation for the side-draft carbs)...anyway, putting that on a Mini engine. I'm going to need some help from you guys who've actually tuned carbs like that! |

I thought I posted this picture here, but can't find it anywhere. Anyhow, here's one of my '78 RX7.
![]() This was the car that the previous owner (yes, an American) killed his girlfriend got thrown in prison, so I bought the car from his bank. Actually the bank branch manager was a guy I knew and he gave me the first and final bit on this car ($500). It was basically stock except for suspension (GAB 5-way adjustable shocks & cut springs). It also had Dunlop racing tires. They were basically racing slicks with groves. Very popular (& cheap) back then (1987). Only lasted 3 months though. Last edited by REH; 10-03-2006 at 08:55 AM. |

Sure thing. What size is the engine? If less than 2.0L, 40's might be over carberated (I know 45's were too big for a 2.8L stock six cylinder). The basic jet setup would be 180 air and 140 fuel using a F11 emulsion tube. My terminology might be a little off, but I remember those settings. The next trick is to balance or sinc the carbs together. I usually do it by cylinder work load. What you do is shut off one set of carbs and have the egine run only on the other. With a techometer (Tach & dwell meter. Do they sell those nowadays?). Set the optimum rpm by adjusting the idle screws (try to idle the engine at the lowest rpm possible). Ganted, the engine will run rough. Shut that carb off and do the same to the other. This will set the carbs for each cylinder. Watch for signs of untuned carbs. 1). popping or back firing when initial acceleration. mainly caused by unsinc'd carbs. 2) popping or breaking up at high rpm. caused by having too lean of a mixer. 3). Engine struggles to accelerate or the power is "wavy" during hard acceleration. Caused by too rich of a mixture. In Hawaii, I don't think you will have to worry about having 2 sets of jets (summer and winter). You may experience performance changes if you go up to, let's say Tantalis were the air is cooler and thinner.
Dual or triple carbs! How fun and cool that was! Grunt!! Quote:

Ooh...sweet!!! I have a pair of 40s and a pair of 45s (my buddy is going to give them to me). Would love to scoop up / buy whatever jets you've got when the time rolls around!
The Mini, as you may or may not remember, uses a funky cylinder head design like the early VW Rabbits - the intake and exhaust ports are on the same side (firewall) of the head. A Dutch company called AKM made this crossflow head - you can use the "standard" cams and exhaust yet you get twin side draft (drought?) carbs up front. They reccomend 40s, but I think a few guys have run 45s. The engine will most likely be 1310cc. It's a lot of carb for the engine, but they've been quite successful with it so far so I know it can be done. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Latka; 06-02-2006 at 12:41 PM. |

Yeah, the longest/earliest video is from its first time at AX, with stock suspension and completely dead shocks. You could compress them with one finger. They didn't video it, but I went into one slalom too hot, and almost rolled, continued to make the turn, and she rocked up on the other 2 wheels, then back again for a 3rd time on 2 wheels! Yeah, in the later videos I got Bilsteins, and eventually H&R springs... not sure which video has which mods. I've now got huge sway bars on it too, but no videos of that. It corners a bit flatter now. ![]() |
