Default Conflict between Molokai residents and off-island divers

Confrontation between Molokai residents and off-island divers KHON 2

Whoever says that "it's public land, free country", obviously has no Hawaiian roots, nor a concept of how Hawaiians maintained and managed a sustainable fishery for the island.

Sure, times have changed, but if you noticed that the most "modernized islands" (Oahu, Maui) have depleted fish in the most populated areas, and poaching, illegal sizes, and "fishing out" spots to make impressive pictures and extra cash have all but left slim pickins for both sustenance and game fishermen and divers who "fish pono".

The story in print is sketchy but hopefully we will see who is involved. If it's the East end I think I know the family/ families involved and would say that they "manage" the areas resources rather passionately, could even be mistaken for aggression, but then again, having the "public water, take what I like" attitude would only inflame and already impassioned people. I lived there 7 years and even I knew to take only what I going eat and NOTHING MORE.

Comments welcomed.
