Default Hawaii Legislators "Discretionary Funds"; How do they Spend Your Tax Dollars?

Saw this on the web this morning and thought it was pretty cool!

Allowance questions: Where politicians spend your money

Embedded in the article is a tool that you can input your legislators name, etc. and get a full pie-chart breakdown of their expenses incurred from their discretionary funds, plus a itemized list of expenses reported. Notice I said, "reported".

link to the allowance tool

You can see where many legislators put their priorities; on communication with their constituents, meetings, food, taking care of volunteers, or spending on themselves.

Example was one legislator's individual flight expenses to a meeting = approx. $1400. Another legislator to the same meeting = approx. $600. Someone decided to fly high in first class methinks.

Act162this is on a distinguished road

interesting - the minorities and those who always face stiff opposition spend a proportionally greater amount on printing/mailing/campaign supplies. incumbents with little to no opposition spend very little on mailings and more on food and volunteer services.

of course with the race for congress this year, everyone is spending like there is no tomorrow. i'm not even lobbying any more, and my son and i are getting invited to all my friends' fundraisers.

unfortunately, they are all running AGAINST each other... d'OH!
