Default New resident has questions....

A friend of mine just posted on another forum. He just moved out here and is wondering how to go about getting his car legit...

Here's the question he posted:

what order do I need to do things in for registering my car here? Recon, safety, insurance, plates? I'm going with USAA as my insurance cause they are giving me a wayyyyyyyyy better deal then ****in Allstate. I need to schedule a recon and I guess I can't do safety without it?

Anyone know the correct way to do this? Usually they won't let you register a car without a safety, but he can't get a safety till he gets his recon. He can't get his recon without his hawaii registration, right?

Welps...are you military?

Hawaii is a no-fault insurance state...and it sounds like you've got the insurance part covered already. First things first then, go get your safety inspection.

You'll need to register with the state within 10 days of receiving the vehicle, as well as with the base if you're military. If you're keeping the vehicle with it's home plates, then all you'll need is a safety inspection in order to get registered. This is the way to go, IMHO, because you won't have to pay taxes and deal with all that blah here. Freakin' expensive here.

If you're going to swap over, then you'll just need to head over to the DMV and register new plates. You'll need proof of insurance (has to be the original, mailed version), as well as your safety inspection.

You don't necessarily need recon unless the safety inspector tells you that you do...it's up to you whether or not you want to do one before the other. I guess if you think you're gonna fail then you can go sign up for it.

You won't need the Hawaii Registration from what I understand to get your recon and safety. They're independant of each other.

Hope that helps, it's been awhile since I registered my car from another state (2004), but that should be it.

Yea I'm military. I would like to switch over because I have no address in Kentucky anymore. I'll be here for a while so I think I might as well switch. Plus I have a plate idea I'd like to get. What do I do if I don't have the "original mailed" version of my insurance? Who knows how long that will take to get...

As for recon, I guess I'll just go do the safety part and see what they say. Anyone happen to know the closes place the Tripler hospital that does safety inspections??

Ben Apuya has always done my safety inspections...friendly guy. He's on Beckley & Gulick. Works hard. Stay the hell away from Jiffy Lube...they are anal as hell because they got caught doing it the wrong way.

i don't know my way around the tripler area too well, but if you're willing to go into kalihi, there's a gas station (union) at the top of houghtailing and n. school street, across the chevron gas station. i think it's called Burt's 76 Union or something like that, there's three gas stations all at the same intersection.

they do safety checks there w/o appointments, they're really fast, and good.
